The movie, “What Dreams May Come,” deals with a dark time in peoples lives; a time that has many questions surrounding it. The afterlife is something that is debated by many and is a big part of faith for many religions. The movie shows what happens in the afterlife from the point of view of someone who has made it to Heaven. We also get to see Hell in the movie because the man goes to save his wife from it. What we see from this movie can also be compared to a book called “The Great Divorce” written by C.S. Lewis about how the afterlife was depicted in both. Also many theories of Atonement can be seen in this movie. And there are also many symbols in this movie that relate this movie to religion. In the movie the afterlife is depicted as having two separate locations for good and bad people, also known as Heaven and Hell. But there is arguably a third location in the movie also purgatory, where Chris had been the whole time, paying his dues so he can get to Heaven to be face to face with God. Chris' son in the movie told him that he will be able to see God when he is ready to see him, which might be telling Chris that he is in purgatory and not fully in Heaven yet. The same seems to be for C.S. Lewis' book. All the ghosts that go on the bus to heaven may just be going to purgatory instead of heaven fully, because instead of seeing God, there are Angels and other Spirits that are willing to help them out by trying to get them into Heaven. Both the movie and the book show that people are able to be saved after their death to get into heaven. Chris' wife Annie was able to be brought from hell to heaven because of Chris' sacrifice for her. And the people in the book are able to be saved by learning to accept their wrong doings.
