A good point is how women athletes have crossed over to more feminine competition as beauty queens, swimsuit models for “Sport’s Illustrated” to escape connotations such as; the female athlete being associated with being a lesbian. It wasn’t until the late 1800’s that women began fighting for their own rights as citizens in America. It started with the fight for the right to own property, developing into the right to vote, and soon escalated into rights in the work place and the rights to their bodies. Many strong empowered women throughout history fought for the rights that women in America have today, making sure there is a voice for women and that it is heard.
