The term appeasement is very relevant when describing the causes of World War II. Appeasement is when a potentially dangerous nation’s demands are met in order to maintain peace, as well as to avoid war. It is because of appeasement that countries like Japan, Italy, and Germany were able to occupy, as well as take over, other countries. The country that is responsible for appeasement is Britain. Having a huge leadership role in the League of Nations, Great Britain played the largest role in allowing Italy, Germany, and Japan to take advantage of other nations, and eventually take them over. Events/agreements that prove these notions are as follows; the Japanese Invasion of Manchuria, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement, the Second Italian-Ethiopian War, the Anschluss, the Czech Crisis, the occupation of the Rhineland, and lastly, the Munich Conference. The Japanese Invasion of Manchuria was very significant. Among other reasons, this event proves that appeasement was a major reason in starting WWII. Japan was attracted to Manchuria because it was large, had great forestry, and also other resources. Japan was a member of the League of Nations. In 1931, the League had the power to put forth economic sanctions, if they weren’t able to persuade Japan. The only problem was that no member of the league wanted to be the one to put forth the economic sanctions. Instead, they sent a representative to find common ground between the Japanese and the Chinese. They proposed that the Japanese leave Manchuria, and then Manchuria would become independent rather than under Chinese rule. This was passed in 1933. This is an example of appeasement, because Britain, France, and the other countries in the League of Nations wanted to avoid war by not angering the Japanese; so instead they tried to persuade. In response to the agreement, the Japanese dropped out of the League of Nations.
