What Are You Really Learning In School? “School puts too much pressure on teenagers and they grow depressed because they’re made to feel like failures.” What are you really learning in school? Granted, the basic classes in school are very helpful because you use them in everyday life. However, in my opinion, most other classes teach irrelevant curriculum. I want to talk about a few quotes I came across. The first one I want to discuss is the quote on the first line, “School puts too much pressure on teenagers and they grow depressed because they’re made to feel like failures.” This quote is talking about the amount of work teachers put on their students. At a high school level most students have on average 7 different classes. For some students that is a lot to manage. They can’t handle it all so they just don’t do it and then their grades drop and they feel like they are not smart enough and that they are a failure. The next quote I came across was, “The fact that some kids feel so uncomfortable about going to school each day that they get depressed and sick is an obvious sign that something is not right.” I think that this quote is referring to the many school kids with anxiety. Many students lack social skills and they don’t have friends so they absolutely hate going into a place full of kids their same age and still being by themself. Therefore, they claim that they are ‘sick’ and can’t go to school just to avoid walking the halls alone. The third and final quote I want to talk about says, “The fact that I have to choose between my grades and my own mental and physical health is really messed up.” I think this quote is saying that kids stress themselves out over getting all their homework done and then they don’t get sleep and so they are not physical or mentally healthy.
