The conventions of college writing are very complex and if professors are more helpful and patient with first year students as they learn academic discourse, students will be better prepared for all future academic endeavors and they will have a better opportunity to strengthen and develop their voice. David Bartholomae, author of Inventing the University, is a professor who writes about the struggles that students face with transitioning into college level writing and learning to write with authority in academic discourse, all while maintaining a unique voice. I agree with Bartholomae’s views on the subject and his arguments are very valid because he speaks from the status and
But the major isn’t nearly as important as the toolbox of skills you come out with and the experiences you have’”(Zernike). Students are increasingly focused on how their major will translate into a job. Zernike interviews multiple professors and advisors from schools all over the country and somewhat of a consensus is found. Taking ‘abstract’ courses and getting involved with different things other than having a set major will lead to more ‘self-discovery’. “I think people change a great deal between 18 and 22” – Dr. Neuhauser, president of St. Michael’s College.
The authors suggest that education should inspire people to act towards the whole rather than on the parts. Another area the authors talk about is the academic rigor involved in the academy. The academic rigor the universities publish is mostly relating to course work. I think as a student who hears that the program in the university is academically rigorous is intimidating. I thing rigor is an overused word that every colleges advertise to make the program seem
However many students want to be given the freedom to decide which classes to attend. Most colleges and universities give professors the authority to set their own attendance rules. On other hand some argue that mandatory composition should not be required, as text books are enough of knowledge and information can prepare them salves without any help from professors. Writing is not just for English major. Taking English course can prepare the students to write successful papers throughout student’s university career.
Trainers should help students in creating such presentations and taking questions .All these activities require more efforts. The trainers should design the course carefully so that they can achieve the main objectives of learning business English rather than involving games in them so that learners are helped not only in learning but also even in the future job activities. Disagreement:- In the teaching of business English as a foreign language, games are very important. Every new learner finds it difficult to cope up with learning of n w language initially and continuous classroom discussions becomes monotonous, slow and boring. Games make lesson learning fun.
Peter Berkowitz, a professor of Stanford University in “Our Compassless Colleges” argues about liberal education in American universities. He proceeds by saying that liberal education in Universities is not structured correctly and that could lead the students to have problems in the long run. Furthermore Berkowitz stated that liberal education in universities provide only superficial-knowledge and not true education. As he sets many questions about who is truly an educated person and to support his ideas about the wrong guidance that universities give to the students, he gives as a major example one of the best universities worldwide, the Harvard University. Berkowitz claimed that although Harvard is a very good university in terms of certificate
Many teachers do not like “catching plagiarists and bringing them to academic justice.” As she states, it is not hard to just cite the author that originally had the information you are using (Bojar). Plagiarism is becoming a big problem in the school system. Many students do not understand what needs to be cited and what does not. The school system should teach students the proper way to cite, and they should teach them that copy and pasting is not writing a paper. According Bojar to students at the community college have a hard time juggling classes along with his or her family and a job.
Then they will have a very narrow minded education. They will only know in depth about their subject area, and in a world that is changing every second it is good have a broader education. By eliminating the large number of general education requirements and adding more major requierment students will be able to expand their horizons and take classes that may interest them. In conclusion, students at the new NCSU campus should
Their perspective on how the underachieved educational system is, alongside my encounters with complex of schooling. In high school, we are given many standards every day that we must meet in order to be considered successful, but the reality is; these standards are fruitless in expectation for colleges and universities. In high school I did not get the English composition skills, to prepare me for my college courses. They are right about their belief that the professors in the universities are very inspired in some ways to give their standards to the students in depth knowledge to set higher standards, however, it is not good to know that some high school students still enter Americas elite schools through remedial process, because it might agitate the worldwide standards set by the school
“The institutions traditionally procure, provide and control the technology for learning but now students are acquiring their own personal technologies for learning and institutions are challenged to keep pace” (Research in Technology Learning, 2010). Computers and other technical devices that are being used to enhance student learning helps to make teaching more creative and effective; however, it has also caused a lot of confusion and chaos in regards to ethics. Once teachers only had to be concerned about the basic rules of classroom etiquette and they could govern their classroom visually. Now teachers have to implement rules and guidelines to ensure that technology in the classroom is being used for its intended purpose to protect students from lurking dangers that might not always be detected by human
