This book relates to the economy of the colonies because colonists made their living based off of jobs like the ones mentioned in this book. Johnny is living in Boston, which is a New England colony, so the economy there was mainly based on shipbuilders, fishermen, artisans, subsistence farming, timber, and commercial trade. In this book, there were examples of artisans, farming, and fishermen. The economy of artisans in the colonies was included in the novel. Mr. Lapham is a silversmith, a type of an artisan.
It is said in that video that Bacon did not approve of relations with the Native Americans. He requested to start a war with them, which was denied by the Governor. The Powhatan tribe had given payment for their own protection from the English settlers as stated in the third video. Bacon ignored Berkley’s orders and caused war against the Indians anyways, targeting the Powhatan’s directly, as also mentioned in the fourth video. Eventually, the seventh video describes how Bacon confronted the Governor directly with six-hundred armed men.
The Puritans wanted to remove all practice and rituals of Catholicism from Europe. John Winthrop and fellow Puritans were frustrated with religious activities in England, “All other Churches of Europe are brought to desolation and or sinnes”. He believed that the Church was corrupted and that the lord “Frowned upon us, doe threatens us fearfully”. Winthrop believed that England was invaded by evil and ran by a corrupted Government, and that the roots for religious learning were being disturbed. They feared to live in such sinful society, because they believed that God predestined people to salvation and others were damned for the rest of time.

They were part of a religious group called the “Puritans” because they wanted to purify the Anglican Church of England from all Roman Catholic practices. Puritans had a dream to adopt reforms in order to purify their nation’s official church. They eventually decided they could best worship God by separating from the Church of England and became known as “Separatists.” The Pilgrims, as part of the Separatists, separated from the Church of England and formed their own congregation. King James I did not like the Puritan Separatists, so they moved to Holland because they feared for their lives. However, life in Holland was not perfect.
This is when the authority of the Roman Catholic Church led by the pope was rejected by those known as Protestants. Henry had imposed his own version on Protestantism where the English monarch became the head of the English church. Edward VI continued the reformation in England as to convert to a purer form of Protestantism. Under the guidance of his protestant council such as Thomas Crammer, Edward reshaped the face of the English church. However on his death, Catholicism returned to England in the form of Mary I.
Luther and Henry VIII’s motives for reform sprung from entirely different sources. Luther disagreed with the Catholic church over the doctrine that allowed the selling of indulgences to lay people. After study of the Scriptures, Luther decided that salvation was achieved not by indulgences or even good works, but only by faith alone. Henry VIII’s reasons for his break with the church came from his desire to divorce his wife at the time, Catherine, and marry Anne Boleyn. He asked Pope Clement VII to announce that the king’s previous marriage to Catherine of Aragon was invalid.
As his subjects, we think that this brought our Church of England too close to Roman Catholic. Later, he attempted to force religious reform upon Scotland and that weakened England’s government and helped precipitate his downfall.
The Glorious Revolution was the dethroning of the unpopular Catholic James II and enthroning Protestant rulers William III and Mary. When the people of New England heard of this, they rose against their royal leaders and tried to get a sense of equality in their colonies. 29. The result of the rebellion in New England was upsetting in that royal governors did eventually restore semblance and order lead by the mother country. There was even more administrative control in the colonies due to Charles II's appointed English officials which hired their friends of whom knew little and did not care about American affairs.
