These views are expressed in his two key works, A Concise History of the Russian Revolution (published in 1995) and Russia Under the Bolshevik Regime 1919-1924 (published in 1994). Pipe’s believes that Lenin was primarily responsible for the success of the uprising, even though Pipe’s recognizes Lenin’s role as the most important, he still hypocritically called Lenin’s April Theses “totally out of touch with reality, if not positively mad” despite the fact that this theses played a huge role in the Lenin and Bolshevik uprising. Pipe’s also believes that Trotsky just carried out Lenin’s commands. However the role or Trotsky and his actions before the October revolution were very evidently done on his own accord, with Lenin accompanying Trotsky in his decisions. In early October, 1917, Trotsky was elected
(2) The laws of war cannot be precisely deduced from history for the obvious reason that history never exactly repeats itself. Certain teachings in the school of history remain constant, but because of change theories of the future are thoroughly presumptive. (3) History helps the strategist ask the right questions to define the problem. The questions, suggested by the history of war and diplomacy, are: What is it about? What is the proper way to go about it?
Being the son of a top ranking admiral in the Navy, his case became highly publicized. While obviously being against torture, he also believes it is morally wrong for the torturer. In his work, he gives three main points to support his war on torture: the issue of the reliability intelligence gained (423), other country’s following in our footsteps regarding torture (424), and the mental harm inflicted in the process (424). In war, the soldiers strategically use intelligence in order to gain an upper hand over the enemy. But what good is intelligence if it’s not accurate (423)?
“Armies are led by incompetent generals.” How far do you agree with this statement in the time period of 1792-1945? Incompetence can be defined as a lack of physical or intellectual ability or qualifications, therefore incompetence in relation to generals could refer to the way they use their skills and abilities. There are many skills attributable to a general, however, at the forethought of this is their use of tactics, an adaptability to change and mould to the situation and the use of resources they deem necessary or happen upon during war. Therefore, it should be these skills we assess when looking at the competence of generals, all the way from the Napoleonic Wars to the World Wars in the 20th century. Looking at the period between 1792 and 1945, it is easy to evaluate generals looking at their tactics as this is a prominent feature in their occupation and can be used to assess their competence in relation to their approach to war.
Additionally there were developments that occurred without war, which illustrates that involvement in war was not the only cause for change. Therefore war was an important catalyst and factor to significant changes but was not the sole cause of change. The war that caused most change was Word War One due to its role in the February revolution in 1917 and the fall of the provisional government in the October revolution. The defeats of the war dwindled support from liberals and Octobrists for the Tsarist regime, which was further worsened by criticism from organisations including the Central War Industries committee and the union of Zemstva. This formed support and reason for the Progressive Bloc.
David McCullough wrote 1776 to show the real side of George Washington and the Americans you know like going in depth of the true nature of the American army in the year 1776. Almost to prove that Washington was not the best in combat because of the 3 or 4 major loses in the year 1776. McCullough shows that you cannot fight a battle without someone who has powerful leadership skills. Commander-in-Chief George Washington of the American army was a man who educated his self. So there for he made some major mistakes in judgment.
SUBJECT: "The Profession of Arms" White Paper Summary 1. Purpose: The purpose of "The Profession of Arms" White Paper is to define terminology and initiate a discussion about the Army as a profession. The White Paper describes how the army is a profession and the Soldier is a professional. Additionally, the paper describes the culture of the Army Profession, the Army Ethic, and the importance of trust in civil-military relations. The paper claims that it should be used a platform for military leaders to discuss, understand, and thereby maintain the Profession of Arms.
Throughout history, mankind has waged war against each other various reasons. These reasons are often times proven to be trivial and superfluous thus making wars preventable. The American civil war was a war that was inevitable because of key events leading up to the war divided the country to the point where it made war unpreventable. The first issue that made the civil war unavoidable was the Declaration of Independence (cite). The writer of the Declaration was Thomas Jefferson who wrote it based off the ideals of the enlightenment period.
This is where Virtue Ethics falls short on this topic, because its focus goes from person to person, and case to case, and this philosophy can easily get lost in the shuffle, when you take into consideration, that in most civilized countries are governed by more than just one man or woman, rather the country is led by a group or system of groups, to make military decisions. For example in America the President as Commander in Chief of our armed forces, however, he can only recommend to the Senate and House of Representatives a military plan of action. And on the opposite side of this coin, in the days of Genghis Kahn (1206-1227) noted Emperor of Mongolia in the 13th century, had the power to declare war on his own without significant resistance. This is not to claim that Genghis Kahn was a virtuous or a Virtue Ethicist in itself, it is purely for the example of the early Mongolian power structure. One other drawback to Virtue Ethics is relativity, for example in American culture it is perfectly acceptable by many groups to consume cows and cow bi-products, while in Hindu culture cows are considered sacred, revered, and is considered the symbol of life, so it is against their beliefs to ever kill a cow.
On the one hand, postmodernism posits that experience and narrative are subjective, and, on the other, survivors of historical crimes of the 20th century claim only victims of these atrocities can discuss their meanings and implications”. The major concern with the portrayals is the subjectivity of it in which the war takes on a person’s own view of the events and the research. Although Atonement doesn’t go into great depths of the specific events of the war meaning that many of the key quotes are generalizations of the war environment rather than specific dated events. However Atonement does comment on how the events the characters are experiencing will be remembered which examines an interesting idea. Although fiction can be a means of remembering the past many precautions need to be taken which
