Imediantly showing Mr Birling’s personality, which is selfish. Then he goes on and saying, “There isn’t a chance of war” this dramamtic irony leads the audience into looking forward to seeing Mr Birling being prove wrong. In addition, this shows Mr Birling’s thoughts on responsibilities are wrong. Saying this, the sudeience should not agree with him and his thoughts on responsibilies due to the examples of dramatic irony. After he had finished his speech on keeping labour cost down and profit high, Inspector Goole enters and throws a shocking news at the Birlings.
Curley has obviously decided it is not worth fighting him but before he leaves he instructs Lennie as he still wants to intimidate him and show him that he has an authoritive figure. In this extract Curley has clearly unnerved Lennie as Lennie constantly seems to be in some discomfort for example “Lennie squirmed under the look and shifted his feet nervously”. John Steinbeck does well to produce powerful imagery by simply using the word “squirmed”. This shows that Lennie is embarrassed and does not know what to do and this causes tension as Curley senses his advantage while George is worried about a possible confrontation. Kozol addresses his readers so that they may spread awareness on illiteracy and eventually resolve the problem. Questions: 1. These explanations confuse the effects of illiteracy with the causes by saying that laziness is the cause of illiteracy, when in reality illiteracy is the cause of innovativeness, that an illiterate has to adopt, that is seen as laziness and stupidity. Kozol refutes these stereotypes with his examples of just how much illiteracy affects a person showing that they become almost immobilized and isolated by it. In his opinion the nation and it's leaders are at fault for not addressing this problem.
By using short and snappy sentences and question marks Shakespeare shows Capulet’s rage and anger. This can be seen when he says “my fingers itch” and “Is she not proud?” This quote shows us that Capulet has become so enraged that he’d even resort to domestic violence which links in to the social historical context – patriarchy. He owned Juliet and got to decide what would be done with her. Furthermore by using short sentences it shows that Capulet is so angry that he’s ‘thinking out loud’ and all the words are spilling out of his mouth without him even thinking about it. By firing short and rapid questions it shows that he doesn’t want an answer, as he isn’t giving anyone time to reply but also that he doesn’t want to hear an answer which would displease him.
George uses the word “job” repetitively to emphasise the importance of work during the depression and the scarcity of a “job”. Further resentment towards Lennie arises when George says to Slim “if that crazy bastard’s foolin’ around too much. Jus’ kick him out, Slim.” The phrase “jus’ kick him out’ implies that he demands quite a lot and would get into a lot of conflict between people. The way that he says this implies that he is frustrated with the situation that he would rather be on his own than have to provide for the two of them all on his own. Later on in the novel “Lennie looked up helplessly at George, and then he got up and tried to retreat.” When Steinbeck writes “Lennie looked helplessly at George” implies that Lennie always looks to George for attention and help when things go wrong in his life.
The soliloquy by Hamlet favors more the expression of pathos. The reason for this is because he says everything from his heart because he is seriously considering suicide. He impacts the reader by making them feel bad for him and the situation in which he is in. In the soliloquy pathos is used in a way to make the reader feel a sense of sadness because Hamlet makes it seem as though there is no point to life. He says “For who would bear the whips and scorns of time” which means who would deal with lives problems.
This is demonstrated by, “…then he looked ashamedly at the flames.” This technique illustrates that George is going to feel repentant about what he has said and will try to make up for it. It also might be said that the character George feels guilty on what he has done and will try and redeem himself. This is noted in the novel when George says, “Aw Lennie.” The effect upon the reader is that George is shamefaced and will try to make his friend Lennie feel better by offering other choices which he could do In conclusion, I think this essay shows that George is easily aggravated and a cautious character.
