When Proctor had to go to the court to get his wife out of being accused of upholding witchcraft he eventually confess to his sins he committed. Talking to Danforth, Proctors says “I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweet. But it is a whore’s vengeance, and you must see it; I set myself entirely in your hands” (page 49 act three) confessing to the crime he did. He realizes what he did was wrong which was why he tried to hide it for so long. But the only way for
Some people try to hide from their lying, and it is not uncommon for guilt to push someone to the absolute boiling point. I believe, in most situations, no one can escape the truth, it will always follow someone by thoughts and memories. In the novel The Scarlet Letter, the character, Hester Prynne, commits adultery with a man named, Arthur Dimmsdale. Hester is publicly shamed and left with the outcome of her daughter Pearl. The townspeople are uninformed that Dimmsdale also committed the sin, he is left unharmed and with a guilty conscience.
Abigail and the girls pretend Mary is bewitching them again which make Mary breakdown and accuse john of being a witch. After being tried as a witch and told he was going to get hanged he has a chance to confess and live but he chooses to die and keep his name. As a result of the lies and the affair between john and Abigail there were a lot of innocent people killed and hurt even those who they claimed they loved. Abigail and Elizabeth are two very different characters but have some similarities. Both Abigail and Elizabeth show determination in order to get what they want, and they are both strong
Both of these literary works take place around the mid 1700’s to the early 1800’s. During this time period, many people were highly religious, and believed that things that couldn’t be explained by normal means was the result of witchcraft. Both the town of Salem in The Crucible and the town of
The first reason is that because Abigail Williams is extremely manipulative and vindictive. Abigail tries to get Procter to pity her saying, “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! John, pity me, pity me!” (Miller 22). Abigail wants Procter to pity and give her what she wants, regardless that his wife caught them once and can catch them again. Another reason their relationship is dangerous is that if John Procter were to prosecute against Abigail Williams saying that she is in fact a witch, Abigail Williams could very easily tell the entire town that she and Procter have been having an affair to get revenge on him.
Kumail Hasan The story of The Scarlet Letter is about a very abhorrent sin that was conducted by two members of the Puritan Society in Boston, Reverend Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne. Though those characters play a large role in the story, the characters of Hester Prynne and Roger Chillingworth have a history together from the past. The couple is married but yet contains two different personalities that are visible throughout the story. The scarlet letter, the sin, and a variety of factors lead the lives of both the characters and easily display the characters true faces. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, uses a variety of rhetorical strategies to display his attitude toward these two characters.
Despite Dimmesdale’s physical deterioration, Hawthorne develops Dimmesdale as morally strong to assert that atonement of one’s sin leads to morality. Arthur Dimmesdale is one of the three main characters involved in the central conflict of the novel. He performed the sin of adultery while Chillingworth was away, and Pearl is his true daughter. Yet, unlike his fellow adulterer Hester, the town does not know of his crime. Watching every day as the people say things to Hester like “At the very least they should put a hot iron on Hester’s head” and “[Hester] ought to die”(88) drives Dimmesdale mad.
Lies in Salem A lie is not terrible, but it is awful when a lie becomes truth and a deadly weapon in the deformed society. In the play "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, the lies of the girls became the testimony of many people engaged in the witchcraft, and lots of innocent people were hanged in Salem. The play is set in colonial Massachusetts, British Puritans established a theocratic society in North America. The residents of Salem believed in witches and witchcraft like all Puritans. All accused witches would be hanged unless they confessed, so some people had to tell lies to save their lives.
The Crucibles The crucibles is like desperation, lies, and hopelessness. Arthur Miller uses Rebecca Nurse to shows us that she is the clear martyr in the play, the most pure and saintly character hanged for witchery. Rebecca Nurse in the Crucibles uses integrity has always been scarce in society. In today’s world and as shown in The Crucible, honesty is unappreciated and the truthful are punished. While this brings fear to all of Salem, one character stands by her beliefs until the death.
Chansol Lim Mr. Dalbey Honors Eng 11 Period 8 November 7, 2012 TSL Essay In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, there are three major sinners: Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Each character commits a different sin. Hester commits adultery with Dimmesdale while Chillingworth, her husband, is absent; Dimmesdale commits the sin of adultery, and compounds it by deceiving others to hide his sin, and Chillingworth plans a hate filled revenge on Dimmesdale. Despite the fact that all three of them commit sins, people from the puritan based society, as described by Hawthorne, regarded Hester as the most sinful person and treated her with disdain. Although the puritan society depicted in The Scarlet Letter
