Angel Navarro English 4th Period November 19, 2012 The novel the Scarlett Letter and the play The Crucible have many similarities, including setting and theme. Although these two writings are very similar, they are also extremely different stories. Both stories have the same general theme; the strictness of the Puritan society and how people committed of sins take their consequences of what they did. A common element with these stories is the setting. Both the Scarlett Letter and The Crucible take place in Massachusetts during the mid 1700’s to the early 1800’s. Many people were super religious during this time period. These stories are both based in a Puritan society, which has many beliefs and rules. The time period of these allow you to see the harshness of the society when dealing with “sin”. Sin was punishable by death, which neither character received, but they did face public humiliation. The main conflict of both of these stories is another similarity, In the Scarlett Letter; Hester commits adultery by cheating on her husband, Chillingworth with the minister of the town, Dimmesdale. Chillingworth seeks to get revenge on Dimmesdale through out the entire novel by trying to make him feel guilty and slowly torture him consciously. In The Crucible, Proctor commits…show more content…
In The Crucible, when Proctor is about to confess to witch, he finally realizes that he’s not this horrible man and when he rips of the paper he was about to sign, it represents freedom and little dignity he has left. In the Scarlett Letter, Hester wears an “A” on her, which is pointed out greatly throughout. The letter represents her sin that everyone recognizes and she is out casted for it. Her daughter Pearl is another major symbol in the novel. Pearl is basically the living version of the letter. The symbols help develop the theme in both stories, but they are used
