Two Slave Stories The slave accounts of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs share similarities and have differences. Douglass and Jacobs both tell their stories in the first person. Both Douglass and Jacobs experienced extremely cruel working conditions that led to each of them running away from their owners. Frederick Douglass explains that Mr. Covey repeatedly beat him after Douglass collapsed from exhaustion while working on the plantation, and Harriet Jacobs had been sexually harassed by Dr. Flint, her owner. These exceptionally sadistic owners forced Jacobs and Douglass to flee. Both of the slaves previously were under the control of owners that were not nearly as brutal.
