What are the real lessons learnt in Robinson Crusoe and how can we relate to them? Robinson Crusoe is an exciting tale about a young man who has always dreamt of sailing from a very young age. One day that dream eventually became true. Whilst Robinson Crusoe is sailing back home, his ship becomes overpowered by a wild storm and he finds himself alone on a deserted island. During Robinson Crusoe’s 28 years on the island he learns some very important lessons which help him and guide him during his time on the island. These lessons not only relate to Robinson Crusoe, we as the reader can also relate to these lessons learnt by him in everyday life. The three main lessons he learns in this story are to be thankful for what you have, learning to make the most of your opportunities and that you should never give up, even though it may seem that all is lost. These three lessons that he learns help him get through life on the island. The first lesson we learn is that we should be thankful for what we have, no matter how bad the situation. When Robinson Crusoe arrived on the island, he discovers that he is the only survivor on board. This is no doubt a terrible situation for Robinson Crusoe to be in, alone on a deserted island not knowing if or how you’ll ever make it back home, but at least you can be glad that you’re alive unlike the rest of your crew mates who have most likely become fish food by now. “I was now landed and safe on shore, and began to look up and thank God that my life was saved, in a case wherein there was some minutes before scarce any room to hope”. Here Robinson Crusoe realises just how lucky he was to have survived, when moments before he believed he wouldn’t make it. After this shocking ordeal Robinson Crusoe learns and that he should be thankful for what happened, no matter how bad the situation may seem. We as the reader can also relate to
