What are the Causes of Stress and How to Manage it? By: Emelito E. Ercilla English 1023 Prof. Georgina Peniaranda March 19, 2013 Introduction Are you stressed out with nothing left to give? It is estimated that as many as eighty percent of physician visits may be stress related. Without knowing how to reduce stress, we leave ourselves susceptible to life-threatening illness, disease, and just plain unhappiness. Stress has become one of the most common words to dot our vocabulary and is unfortunately, one of the greatest liabilities of the way we live. It has been defined as a pressure, tension or excess strain and its profound effects on our mental and physical health support the fact that we live a high stress world. When a person experiences stress, the brain releases chemicals called epinephrine (adrenaline) and cortisol. A stressor sends these chemicals, or stress hormones, racing through the body. Stress hormones prepare the body to protect itself from danger. It is the reaction of our bodies and minds to something that upsets their normal balance. The human response to stressful events is an ancient one, dating back to a time when life was a constant struggle for survival. It has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action it can result in a new awareness. As a negative influences, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression which in turn can lead to health problems. Today, we must cope with the “hurry up and wait” mentality that causes our stomachs to churn and our heads to aches. Causes of Stress Stress is not always produced by “bad” situations, even seemingly good things that happen to all of us on occasion can significantly raise our stress levels.
