Along with the development of the rapidly modernized society, the impact of automobiles on American people has become immense. Hardly any American families live without a car, and most teenagers know how to drive at the age of 16 as soon as they got legal permission. Cars, vans, light trucks, SUVs and motorcycles since early time have played such an important role in the US that it is hard to imagine the American life without them. I. Reasons of automobile dependence Generally speaking, there are four main reasons for this situation. First of all, American people are being dependent too much on automobiles mostly because of their ability to provide mobility. Everyday life activities require people to move, and modern industrialized life at present require people to shift even more and faster from place to place. The fact that those movements can not be done without automobiles gives existence to the automobiles dependence. Cars are now available for almost every American to be satisfied all demands of displacements which are increasing day by day. Moving from Chicago to New York is no longer a problem, neither is going from one’s house in the city to the suburb. Automobiles make them all possible. Gradually people even use their cars to drive to the supermarket which is 500 meters away from home. That is when dependence begins. Secondly, the country’s development also gives rise to automobile dependence. As industrialization takes place, more factories and buildings are continously built. The key point here is that they vary in locations. While most big factories and workshop are in the suburb where there are plenty of space, headquarters and main offices situated in city centers.
