During the fall and winter of 1838 and 1839, the Cherokees were forcibly moved west by the United States government. Approximately 4,000 Cherokees died on this forced march, which became known as the "Trail of Tears." The Indian Removal Act was filed under Chapter 168 and it specified that [it is] "an Act to provide for an exchange of lands with the Indians residing in any of the states or territories, and for their removal west of the river Mississippi" (Perdue and Green, 110). The act was established by congress in order to limit the amount of territories the Indians inhabited westward. The Indians suffered many casualties during this period; there were estimates that thousands of Indians lives were lost due to exposure, disease and malnourishment.
He was born as the property of the Peter Blow family since his parents were both slaves. The United States took possession of Missouri in 1804 and after much dispute on whether or not it would be a slavery state, an agreement known as the Missouri Compromise came about. This caused a balance in the number of free vs. slave states. Due to Missouri being located in the middle of what was freedom and slavery, there were major problems arising. The Blow family relocated to St. Louis in 1830 and then ran into some financial problems, which caused them sell Dred Scott to Dr. John Emerson.
While some groups favored escaping white harassment through resettlement, many more opposed the idea of leaving their ancestral homes. Their desire to stay was reinforced by the unhappy experiences of small groups of Cherokees, Delawares, Shawnees, and others who had accepted a land exchange and gone westward between 1785 and 1800. After the War of 1812 and the elimination of the British as a potential ally, Indian removal became a basic item in virtually all treaties with Native groups. In 1817 John C. Calhoun, a strong advocate of Indian removal, was named secretary of war by James Monroe. Calhoun joined forces with the war hero Andrew Jackson and Lewis Cass, governor of Michigan Territory, to urge formal adoption of a removal

The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a bill that dealt with issues of slavery in new territories, like the Compromise of 1850. The territories of Kansas and Nebraska wanted to become states, but the problem was would they become slave or free states. The south wanted Kansas and Nebraska to become slaveholding states because the south wanted slavery to spread across.

Democrats at the national level were battling Republicans' attempts to assure that black citizens could exercise their rights, including the right to vote. General John Freemont of Missouri attempted to enact an order which would have freed all slaves. General David Hunter, aware of the potential slaves have to turn the tide to the war, also attempted to enact an order which would have abolished slavery in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Lincoln stops all of these orders from being enacted due to stance of slavery.
