The film, Quiet Rage: The Standard Prison Experiment, shows a real life example of how a person’s thoughts, attitudes, and behavior can be easily altered according to environmental changes. When exposed to changes in social situations, our mindsets and behaviors are easily influenced. In this experiment, male college students were randomly assigned roles as either a prison guard or a prisoner. Although the participants were fully aware that these were only roles and not their true identities, the participants were already experiencing changes in their own behavior by day two. The prisoners began adopting prisoner-like behavior such as rebelling and swearing at the guards as they walked by.
Deputy Murray started in the jail in Union county, which was a position he seemed very fond of. I as most really have no clue what a Deputy Sheriff does on a daily routine and no TV drama will ever show the truth. Deputy Murray who has recently been promoted to a field officer, has many daily duties that include patrol, responding
The findings cannot be generalised globally to other cultures and races as the study only involved American, black and white inmates. Harer and Steffenmeier’s study also used secondary data which poses no ethical issues but may be unreliable and outdated. Further limitations of this model were put forward by McCorkle et al who claim that The Importation Model fails to highlight suggestions on how to control violent offenders, or how to reduce prison cruelty. Moreover, this model predicts that previous gang members also increase levels of institutional violence. However, DeLisi et al studied over 800 male inmates and found no correlation between gang membership and institutional violence.
Once the visitor is in contact with the inmate, a short embrace and a closed mouth kiss is permitted at the beginning and end of each visit. They various regulations seem unappealing at first but the opportunity to visit a loved one in prison is such a privilege that I understand why one would go through all the steps to see a friend or family member locked
McMurphy comes to the ward and helps and hurts the boys that live there. When McMurphy first enters the hospital, the inmates have no issues with the routine; they take their pills, eat their meals, and maintain a dull, repetitive life in the mental ward. They are very content to live out the rest of their lives in the ward. When McMurphy becomes an inmate he disrupts this routine of security. Coming from the outside world, McMurphy brings with him the element of free will.
He treated Sam well and taught him the ropes when everyone else made fun of him as soon as he walked through the gym door. It showed me a lot about Tiny, and possibly that Tiny was Sam one day and was just retuning the favor. The authors writing style is very easy to follow and understanding, but at times he makes it intense when needed. He writes in a style that keeps you interested all times but does not leave you hanging or guessing. That is the strength of the book I think, not the simplicity but the way he makes you feel as though you are the writer.
The video on “Pelican Bay State Prison: War Zone” had a great abundance of information that crime that is supported evolves from the social structure theory. Prisoners who are living and/or sent to live there at Pelican Bay State Prison have set their own goals to get into there because it is a reward for them rather than a punishment. The reward of this prison is that the meanest and most violent prisoners that leave this prison become gang leaders. Leaders of the gangs that are in the prison will still run the gangs with no fear at all. These leaders of the gangs have no knowledge of any other family but the gang family, which for that they would kill and/or give their life for the gang.
The story of Malcolm X, “A Homemade Education” specifies how while he was in jail he read even in the dark, only with the glow of a corridor light. This shows that he was determinant to learn and that determination was a great characteristic on him. It also shows how determination is very important in our lives to succeed. For example, in the short story “College” by Anzia Yazierska she describes that she couldn’t jump over the hurdle and that all her classmates were laughing about her. It was embarrassing for her but she had a goal, to graduate from college.
She says that people with a social work background are often shocked on entering a YOI: "When you first come in it can be harsh to see young people being locked up, it goes against all your social work beliefs and ethos and is sometimes quite difficult." Down on Doulton wing 60 boys and young men are having their lunch after completing a morning of educational activities. They are sitting at plastic tables in the middle of the wing with their backs to the cells they will spend the afternoon in while staff complete their monthly training sessions. David Mitchell* and Paul Evans,* both aged 18, are cellmates on Doulton. Their cell is spotless, with a host of toiletries arranged neatly on a table and walls taken over by posters of Beyonce and flash cars.
We are let off the prison bus, where we weren’t even shackled. Only in the lame elementary level drills were those ever used. There are many, many, doors to choose from to enter this maximum security facility. I personally love walking through the main doors. Outside the main doors is the warden standing there with another unarmed security guard.
