It was composed of Octavian, Marc Antony, and Lepidus. The Republic was divided into two with Octavian governing the west and Anthony the east. Lepidus was pushed out of the picture as the two of leaders made this agreement of a split Rome. Eventually breaking out into civil war, Octavian defeated Antony at the battle of Actium in 31 BC. Octavian was in total control of Rome after Antony and Cleopatra both committed suicide.
Octavian gained victory and claimed the supreme rule of the Roman world. Upon his return from Egypt in 29BC, Octavian had full consulship powers and under counsel of his uncle’s death, refuted the appearance of acquisitioning too much power by ‘transferr(ing) the republic from my power to that domination of the senate and the people of Rome’. In return the senate conferred upon him proconsular imperium, whilst continuing to be elected consul every year. In a shrewd attempt for more power, Octavian decided to step down from his roles of power and show allegiance to the republican Rome. However in return the senate placed upon him more power
Augustus Caesar: “The Revered One” In the last one hundred years before Christ (B.C. ), the Roman Empire was the biggest and strongest power in the world. Until 31 B.C. Rome was a republic ruled by elected officials. Augustus Caesar assumed power as the first Roman Emperor in 31 B.C.
She desired the power to govern Rome’s empire, and to govern a vast Roman world-state. Instead, Octavian got this power. He was considered the first ruling Emperor of Rome. The Senate granted him the name Augustus, which means the Revered One. Augustus gained the approval of Senate to rule for life, shared power with them, and still held the right to vote.
The emperor now had “right to declare war, ratify treaties, negotiate with foreign leaders, and chose their own successor” (Laffery, The Fall of Rome). Since the republic was the form of government that was ruled by elected citizens (senate, assemblies, etc..) once the empire emerged, the emperor became a supreme ruler that took over the power that the senate and assemblies once held and by the 3rd century, the senate had little to no power and very little influence. Thankfully, the Empire actually did see that they could gain peace for a short while with good emperors, one that had the

However during the middle ages this all seemed to come crashing down, due to civil wars and peoples push for power over the entire Empire. During this time most of the reforms and finding in education seemed to have been lost or destroyed by leaders. By doing this the entire Roman Empire fell and was destroyed. It would take more time after this to relearn everything lost. The Roman Empire went from an elite civilization down into a bunch of warring people fighting for land.
Bleda and I just recently defeated the Roman general Aspar. The defeat of Aspar scared the Romans greatly, making them purchase peace with an annual tribute of 6000 pounds of gold. I have come to believe that Bleda is no longer fit to be in command, and must be killed soon. Tonight I plan to slit his throat while he is asleep. As soon as he is dead I will unite all of the Huns under my leadership and become the Absolute ruler I was destined to be (Dyson 282-283).

Running head: Historical Carrie Walker HTH-379 Grand Canyon University July 1, 2012 Introduction In today’s society we have a separation of church and state, but during the middle ages, the church was the state, most of the time. Church Rule The plague hit Rome early in 590 A. D., the city was in agony. Floods and wars together with the plague took its toll. Sore throat, black outbreaks and a swift demise were leaving wagons loaded high with the dead. People went crazy, Rome became a desert, and Pope Pelagius II died, screaming in pain (Shelley, 2008).
