Weight Loss Surgery Quick Fix or Lifestyle Change? Is weight loss surgery a quick fix or a lifestyle change? Commonly misunderstood, many think weight loss surgery is a quick fix to a life of wrong decisions; however, it is not a quick fix, but a lifestyle change. I elected to have this procedure in 2012 so I feel that I am knowledgeable enough to describe how it is performed, who are the candidates, where can it be done, when is it appropriate, and why would one consider weight loss surgery. So, throughout this paper we will take a look at the procedure, the facility, and the benefits of having weight loss surgery. First, we will look at the procedure of how a weight loss surgery is performed. Gastric Bypass Surgery also commonly called Roux-en-Y is a procedure in which the Doctor goes in and divides the stomach into a larger portion and smaller portion. The smaller portion of stomach is then sewn together or stapled to be capable of only holding a cup of food. This part of the surgery causes people to feel full quickly and eat less. The next part of the surgery is where the surgeon takes the smaller portion of the stomach and disconnects it from the first part of the small intestine and reconnects it further down on the intestines. This part of the procedure helps to stop the body from absorbing many of the calories and nutrients. This is why all weight loss surgery patients are instructed to take supplements such as calcium, multivitamin, iron, and B12 daily. This procedure is also typically done laparascopically now with minimal incisions usually varying from 5-6 small 0.5 to 1 inch incisions. That is how weight loss surgery is performed. Next, we will look at who are the candidates for weight loss surgery and when is it appropriate. Weight loss surgery is a risky surgery if you do not follow the doctor’s instructions to the letter.
