Week 7 Case Study: GIVING AND RECEIVING ON FREECYCLE.ORG Case Study Discussion Questions 1. Why do you think Freecycle.org has achieved such high levels of growth in such a short period of time? From the text wit can be determined that Freecycle.org has achieved a good amount of success from its millions of members in countries across the world and positive word of mouth references. The fact that they do not have any commercial interest is refreshing. It could be assumed that because the organization is genuinely try to make the world a better place, people believe in them. This site helps people get rid of or find things they want and keep these items out of our landfills. It’s a great product. 2. Freecycle created an alternative disposal option that is rapidly growing. Discuss ways that Freecycling might affect the purchase habits of consumers. As we become more technologically advanced as a society, the options for how to purchase a product continue to grow. Freecycle has tapped into away to use technology to connect people and help the environment. For people who are on a budget or that want to be more socially responsible, Freecycle can help them find products to meet their needs. When a major business is doing upgrades they could use this service to give their old equipment to someone that could still use it. Freecycle could help big corporations be more socially responsible also. 3. Should for-profit businesses like eBay get into the Freecycling business? Should companies motivate more consumers to give things away that they might otherwise be able to sell or auction? Can they still make a profit while they help to eliminate waste? I don’t think the model for freecycling would work for a company like eBay without some sort of finder’s fee or referral fee.
