This is the perception of Muslim women that I have been exposed to for most of my life. The media presents to me all I have ever known of the Middle East; women covered in burqas, or wrapped up completely in their hijab. The veil, and women in general, has become a symbol for the inferiority of the Middle East. But, like a person can be wrong about a woman who wears glasses, the world as a whole can be very wrong about the real meaning of the veil, and about their perception of the women of Islam. Leila Ahmed’s The Discourse of the Veil explores the real source of women’s struggles in Islam versus the purely symbolic ones that the West concentrates its critique on.
While he suggests how to kindly treat one race of women, he emphasizes on how to womanize another. The culture associated with “How to date a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl, or halfie”, believes that women will act accordingly, and should be treated based on their own culture and race. In “Girl” by J.Kincaid and “How to date a browngirl, blackgirl, whitegirl or halfie” by J.Diaz both authors describe how culture influences the outlooks, and stereotypes on women. The expectations of females seen in “Girl” revolves around a strict set of cultural rules for women. Through oral transitions the girl’s mother spreads the beliefs of their culture.
Underwear is supposed to be worn under the other clothes because the purpose of underwear is to cover our private parts. To place Vivienne’s underwear as outerwear designs on the outside, it is to draw attention to something that’s supposed to be secret. For example, one of Westwood designs includes in the Buffalo Girls Collection (Autumn-Winter 1982-83), this collection included a shirt which was made out of what appears to be a bra and underwear with mesh gauze in between. This design places that which is private on display. It draws attention to female’s breasts and bottoms.
Did your Islamic religion change the way you and the people around you viewed the war? I notice the different types of clothing, traditional or Western, play an important role in how you are viewed because you can express yourself through what you wear. Did the Western type clothing give you or any other women a sense of individuality and respect? 4. Why does the young Fatima prefer to wear her Tunisian clothes to the Western dresses her mother likes her to wear?
She was also a publicly visible woman. She initiated the marriage with Mohammad. Polygamy is also important to the history of the religion. It means to have more than one wife. In the history of the Muslim religion, The Prophet Mohammad originally wanted to provide protection for widows and orphans.

She, herself, wears a hijab while playing and argues that it is not a safety hazard if worn properly. She suggests that soccer is an excellent sport for all to play, as it is affordable, great exercise, and promotes teamwork. She uses examples in two instances where girls have been banned from playing, because of their head gear. Khan states that some directors in FIFA and VSF in Australia have supported the act of wearing hijab, and have changed the rulebooks to allow this. By referencing a movie that illustrates similar instances, she expresses concern that the girls may lose their cultural diversity.

I placed both charts side-by-side to obtain a better view of the similarities and differences listed by me and my sister, Cathy. Both charts were very similar, the majority of our thoughts and views about Christian Americans, Muslims, and Arab Americans were alike. Both charts listed Muslim and Arab American women as oppressive, we both believed this group looked at woman as homemakers,
“And here is your lanyard, I replied, which I made with a little help from a counselor (29-30.) In this line, we grasp how the narrator feels confident that the lanyard he braided would give his mother the passionate satisfaction that she once gave him. One of the key phrases in this line that demonstrates self- confidence in the narrator is “with a little help from a counselor”. With that help he received, he feels that the lanyard is something huge that can recompense his mother. The other tone that is seen throughout this poem is the mother’s responses.
