“We Found Love” Pop star Rihanna has reached new limits in the music world by her combination of artistic talent and scandalous drama. She has eleven number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100. This current sensation has achieved all this success by not necessarily being the most talented, but by having a way of connecting with her audience through catchy beats and sharing her public life. Chris Brown, Rihanna’s ex-boyfriend, assaulted her, which shocked the nation and brought fans to a very personal level with Rihanna. One of her most famous songs, “We Found Love,” remained number one worldwide for over ten weeks. Although this song only has 206 words, and out of those 112 repeat the line “We found love in a hopeless place,” the music video shares an intense story that first came out in 2011. Directed by Melina Matsoukas, the music video to this song tells the story of a destructive relationship of two lovers, Rihanna and a man who arguably looks identical to Chris Brown. The “We Found Love” music video depicts love as an addiction through the use of Rihanna’s public dispute along with provocative imagery throughout the music video. Before analyzing the various shots of the music video, background information is needed to further understand the meaning. The director of “We Found Love” is Melina Matsoukas who is an American music video director who specializes in pop music. Most of her work is described as, "a chalk full sic of bright colors or crisp black and white images, smooth spotlights, and tasteful retro video models” (About). Matsoukas does not believe that expensive equipment is necessary in order to produce a hit music video.
