We Can Evade Reality but Cannot Avoid the Consequences of Doing so

Have you ever avoided doing your school work, but then realising that no matter what you do, there are always going to be consequences? I personally believe that one can avoid their reality temporarily; however the consequences of doing so cannot be escaped. Reality is a double-edged sword; we can evade it and face the consequences of doing so, or we can face it and suffer the consequences of doing so. All too often, reality can be overwhelmingly negative, with no other means of escape but to deny the truth. And when we come across this negativity, we will usually evade our reality. Why may we avoid reality? One may escape their reality for several different reasons whether it is bad memories, guilt, boredom or simply curiosity. If this was to be ongoing, however, it can lead to repercussions and we may become withdrawn and ostracised which then will become destructive for our reality and we wouldn’t be able to differentiate between what is real and what is false. We are all guilty for evading reality at some point in time, which there is no harm in doing so. We need that time to escape, to cope and survive. One is able to escape their reality through daydreaming, illusions, fantasy and imagination. However these can all lead to an individual to falsify their reality. Take Blanche Dubois from Tennessee Williams’ ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, Blanche avoids her reality through creating her own world of fantasy and holding on to her past of Belle Reve. While Blanche explicitly states; “I don’t want realism,” through Stanley, this puts forth the idea that reality is inescapable, and that the consequences for escaping reality are dire, harsh and cruelly judged by society. Through her web of lies, Blanche cannot be trusted, and her world of fantasy eventually collapses and she cannot separate real from illusions, and is then taken to a psychiatric ward.
