It seems that everyone thinks that all disaster has struck in Amy Hempel’s "Today Will Be A Quiet Day." I disagree. I think that everything might seem to be going bad, but when the day is over the children’s father realizes that everything is absolutely fine. The situations in the beginning of the story lead you to believe that the story will be depressing. But throughout the story I pick up little hints that this day was exactly what everybody needed: to get away from everything.
At this point in the story O’Brien to the point of view of the people who read it seems like a coward for running away. He drives off not really going anywhere till he gets tired and stop at the Tip Top Lodge. He meets Elroy Berdahl, an old man who owns Tip Top Lodge and as O’Brien says the person who basically saved him. The elderly owner, Elroy Berdahl, rents him a cabin. Elroy does not pry into O'Brien's plans, though they are probably fairly obvious.

Nice to meet you Miner Matt.” “You find any gold?” he mumbled.” Not much, but I will show you what I found.” So I pulled out my small vial of gold flakes and handed it to him. He laughed hysterically and replied, “Do you want to see the gold I found today?” I sure would.
I had 27 from head to toe. We went inside and iced our bodies in silence, both experiencing our own misery. I looked at him, my old hero. I wanted desperately to demand an explanation for his fleeing, but something told me I wouldn’t like the answer. Instead I redressed and prepared for my departure as my grandfather went for his wallet.
My ninth grade was pretty cool until the last week of school I let my mouth get the best of me and said some things that I really should’ve not said and because I did I earned the next semester at the alternative school. When school started back I was very sad because I had to go to the “bad” school with all the “bad” kids and I was very nervous. Once I got there it was pretty cool and I really enjoyed it because the classes were smaller and you got more one on one help. My grades went up and my mom decided that I should spend the rest of the year there, which really messed me up because they did not offer any elective classes only the basics . My eleventh grade year was also a disaster because of the struggle of passing my biology state test and I was really distracted and just wanted to go back to the alternative school but my mom and the principle would not send me back.
They didn’t want me to cause any issues that they had to deal with. You could say that some teachers just wanted me out of the school; they got what they wanted. With a 45-Day Suspension, they got what they wanted: a long break from me and break from writing passes down to the office. The unforgettable reason for this was marijuana. It all started right before the high school football playoff game.
