A simple day-to-day task tends to revolve around smoking, and has become as much a part of the routine as getting dressed for work or eating breakfast. For anyone who is ready to quit, there are multiple ways including behavior therapy, nicotine replacement therapy, and the old fashioned quitting cold turkey. As obvious as it may seem, the first step to quitting is simply to be ready to quit. Most smokers know that they should quit, but coming to the realization that they are truly ready to do so can be tricky. Without the desire to quit, any method that is used is likely to be doomed from the start. Some smokers attempt quitting multiple times, using multiple methods, and end up discouraged to go through the process again. Past failures must be put aside, and fears need to be recognized for what they are. Cognitive behavior therapy involves working with a trained therapist to talk about issues and learn ways of coping with feelings, in either individual or group sessions. The focus is on current problems, not on the past. For this reason, this can be a hard method to face, but some people find the strength nonetheless. Nicotine replacement therapy is a way to give nicotine to the body by means other than tobacco. It is used to decrease withdrawal symptoms triggered by stopping smoking or chewing tobacco. Although it is still an unhealthy alternative, it allows the addict to need less and less nicotine as time goes on, reducing the urge to smoke. Going cold turkey is one of many ways people try to quit smoking. To some, it conjures up visions of horrible withdrawal, to others it represents mental strength.
