The current organ donation system has clearly failed at addressing the reoccurring issue with the lack of organ donations as a result many have died and is currently costing the country Billions of dollars. Statistic from June16, 2004 shows that there were 85,744 waiting list candidates waiting to receive an organ and only 6540 transplant were made which is only a mere ten percent of the waiting list (Richard, Schultz 332). This public turmoil had caused many innovative researcher and economist to come up with solution for the ongoing lack of donations in the United States and the world. Unfortunately moral and ethical concerns will have to be the opportunity cost of all the life could be
The rough Winter most likely was the cause to 70 deaths. Based on the “Background Essay”, “Then, in the awful winter of 1609-1610, another two-thirds of the settlers died.” Harsh winters were bound to happen. There was nothing anybody could do about it or prevent it. The colonists could have prepared for it, but because they did not have the current technology, they could have not possibly predicted that a rough winter was coming their way. According to “Document D”, in 1607 August through October “Summer sickness kills half the colonists” The summer of 1607 was so severe that it killed 50 people.
“Our world is one of terrible contradictions. Plenty of food, but one billion people go hungry. Lavish lifestyles for a few, but poverty for too many others. Huge advances in medicine while mothers die every day in childbirth, and children die every day from drinking dirty water. Billions spent on weapons to kill people instead of keeping them safe.” (Ban Ki-Moon) The human rights issue addressed in this quote is one that the whole world is facing and has been facing for millennia.
This includes exposure to light, pollution, weathering, erosion, and people walking through the sites, treasure hunters and vandalism. The damage done to Pompeii alone is expected to cost over 300 million US dollars to conserve the town, although due to the severe lack of funding this can be considered to be an impossible task. As both Pompeii and Herculaneum were initially excavated in the 18th century they have been standing exposed to the elements for hundreds of years, and so all structures have been affected by general deterioration over time. Excavations have left structures unstable and are on the verge of collapse. For example on November 6th 2010 the house of the Gladiators collapsed due to general deterioration and also heavy rainfall – see source B.
“Hurricane Mitch was more destructive than Andrew because of a variety of factors.” Mitch is considered to be the most deadly hurricane in the last 200 years in the Atlantic, stronger and more intense than Hurricane Andrew, having caused the most serious material damage in history. In Mitch, 4 countries were affected (Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guaternala) whereas in Andrew only a fraction of South America was seriously affected. In Mitch 10ml people were left homeless without shelter and aid, with mothers washed out to see and thousands trapped, as well as the possibility of more floods. In Andrew hundreds and thousands of people were without food but food and water were provided sooner than they were to the poor countries that Mitch affected. A
Just over 50% of the population had been immunized against infectious diseases before the earthquake, well below the World Health Organization goal of 90%. According to figures from the Ministry of Public Health and Population, there are also approximately 4,000 amputees that need ongoing support, which is particularly devastating in a country where the majority of the population travels by foot or bicycle (Office of Haiti Special Coordinator, 2011). Cholera is an outbreak caused by the lack of clean water and washing facilities. Clean water and soap will dramatically slow the disease from spreading. There was a Cholera outbreak in Haiti due to the lack of these two basic necessities.
NCDs affect everyone, from the rich to the poor. Now especially, the poor are becoming more affected because of lack of access to education and services required to prevent and treat NCDs (Anderson et al.). In the Dominican Republic, the non-communicable disease that causes the most deaths is cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases involve
Ike was a huge economic burden to the U.S. and “estimates suggest Ike may become one of the costliest hurricanes on record” (FEMA 10). Hurricanes are known for causing severe structural damage to houses, but also have an effect on many businesses as well. Many people had to evacuate and be out of work for up to two weeks due to power outage and debris. Also, some businesses were damaged by flooding and wind, which caused the loss of crucial business equipment. Businesses were flooded along the Texas coast and lost all of their vital technology such as computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
Nicholas Bloom, Author of Public Housing that Worked, acknowledges the skepticism of most Americans in saying,“Across the country public housing projects are being demolished at a record pace largely because most Americans believe that public housing has no chance of succeeding.” So why is public housing failing? And what will be done before thousands more Americans are left homeless. Public housing has created reliance on the government, unsafe living conditions, and large concentrations of poverty. Everyday events and common occurrences inside public housing would shock many, due to the high volume of violence. Also shocking is the high prevalence of health issues.
Within five years of the arrival of the disease, Europe saw 25 million people die. Every winter, the disease would just vanish because the fleas that carried it were hidden during that season because of the severe cold weather, but every spring the disease would appear again, taking with it more people than before. (MiddleAges.Net) The disease was not only affecting the normal civilians but it was affecting the clergy also. Whenever a case of Black Death took a person’s life, the priest from Church would go to see the dead person but in turn would also get affected. This is how priest from all the Church were getting affected and due to this, there were no more priest left to go look for other dead people in the affected
