Hungary Food and Agricultural Organization Impact of water scarcity on social and economic development In recent years water scarcity has grown rapidly across the world. According to. Major study done by the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture, one in three people face water shortage along with almost 1.2 billion people across the world. As one of world's most key problems directly effecting people, water scarcity has deteriorated much of impoverished population's social and economic development. The problem grows in concern as it does not effect just one region or country, but many including: Mexico, Pakistan, India, South Africa, and China. The root of water shortage many times lies in uncontrollable climates such as arid and semi-arid regions and water droughts. For many, roughly 1.6 billion, the case of water scarcity can lie in their own countries economic problems which inhibit them from acquiring the necessary equipment and infrastructure required to take water from local rivers and aquifers. Communities that suffer the greatest health problem from inadequate water supplies are unable to help themselves and therefore cannot escape from the cycle of disease and poverty. The scarcity of water in these countries affects any developments they could make to get the economies stronger and social problems solved. The problem could be easily solved with resources and attention must be placed on these regions. The government of Hungary is taking steps to reduce water scarcity in their country. In 2011 Andor Nagy, the president of the environmental committee in Hungary's National Assembly, advocated for the government to end the very wasteful trends of the country by 2012.
