There are 3 alternative futures, business as usual scenario which will be unattainable in the long term, water crisis, which is the most worrying of all which shows mismanagement of water resources or climate change, threatening the water and food supplies. This could potentially lead to a wider geographical problem such as conflicts. The last is sustainable water, which suggests stabilising consumption and human environmental impacts. One player is ‘WaterAid’ an international non governmental organisation, who are non-profit, voluntary citizens group. NGOs usually focus in developing countries, where many are in poverty have very little basic resources if any.
Over consumption has led to many cures and medicines being created, and has made the world a better and safer place then it once was. The Buy Nothing Day would only hinder the progress that mankind has made in keeping the environment intact. The way of life in the 21st century has and will be defined by consumerism. Consumerism has lifted nations out of recessions and created millions of jobs and opportunities. The Buy Nothing Day is just a way for environmentalists to voice their theories about how to fix the environment.
Ashly Gourdie English 101/504 Dr. Martinez October 15th, 2012 The Waterless State Do you ever wondered what it be like if one day you go get a drink of water but no water was coming out of the fosset? Well, in New Mexico there is a high risk of drought but people keep thinking that there is a limitless amount of water. Despite how much rain fall New Mexico gets each year, millions of gallons of water are being used each day by corporations’ and the people. But when the time comes for people to start realizing the effects it has on the water system it might be too late. Well the U.S. Geological Survey released a report showing that Albuquerque was pumping out its ground water nearly three times faster than it could be replenished (174).
Many people in society believe public toilets are irrelevant to modern America, and they aren’t interesting enough to discuss, but according to George, the conditions of public toilets stem from plenty of debatable issues in the present-day times. While sanitation is a severely ignored condition nationwide, Rose George has made it clear that it is in dire need of attention. Sanitation is not the same everywhere, the conditions of it completely vary by location. One of the main areas in the world where sanitation is taken serious, is China, where the Bidet toilets are more common than any household item. While China has advanced sanitarily, there are still 2.6 billion people in the world who do not have access to any toilet at all.
Figure 2 shows how developing countries such as Ghana and Colombia pay a lot more for their water meaning that a larger proportion of their income is spent on what is seen as the most basic resource. This can mean that for the poorer population water is sometimes unaffordable which puts their health at risk as they may seek water from contaminated sources; diseases like cholera are more likely to spread due to lack of clean water and due to lack of hygiene. Often in countries such as Ghana, the poorer population do not have access to running water in their homes and therefore have to walk long distances to collect water; this also highlights a poor quality of life. Due to high water costs, countries such as these are unable to use water for luxury purposes e.g. dishwashers and therefore water wastage is less likely.
They don’t use inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, machinery, or irrigation (Haggerty, 1989). Much of these items can’t work for them or they can’t afford them. They have nearly 130 irrigation systems, but many lack up to date maintenance, clogged with silk, or provide irregular water supplies (Haggerty, 1989). With all of these issues Haiti is need of help. The U.S. can help along with other strong counties.
23.5 million people in America live in a food desert. A food desert is a geographic area where affordable and nutritious food is difficult to obtain, usually in rural areas and low-income communities. Not being able to have easy access to grocery stores changes multiple things. Most of the time you have to buy multiple of one item to prevent running out. This causes a problem because fruits and vegetables do not stay ripe forever.
My last point not only affects North Dakota but also the whole United States, things are running slowly behind the average pace of North Dakota where some producers fields still have standing water in them. Which will cause many headaches throughout the state it will result in a significant economic impact in the state? As 6.3 million acres go unplanted it will result in a impact in a state who normally plants about 22 million acres- regardless if printed planting insururance covers the costs, but the costs are not the only concern. Many of the concerns deal with the acres that go unplanted and how much it is going to affect many different types of food industries. One example of the devastation from crop loss due to the flooding is many consumers could see pasta sky rocket as they pay more for pasta after all the heavy spring rain and record flooding, more than 1 million acres in one of the nation’s best durum wheat-growing areas.
Annin writes, a growing global water shortage will put tremendous pressure on the water-rich regions of the world to open up the spigots (2007). The United Nation predicts that by 2025 two-thirds of the global population will face water shortages. You need to look only as far as what Russian farmers did as they looked to what they thought was a never ending supply of water in the Aral Sea. They began pumping from it’s tributaries to irrigate crops and “bloom the desert,” in little more than 14 years the results are catastrophic, The Aral lost 90 percent of it’s volume and 75 percent of it’s surface area, for
Some families are suffering from starvation because there isn’t enough food in overcrowded homes to meet every ones basic need. Some foods are often fried and very unhealthy. Several of the health care problems for American Indians stem from Alcohol which is about four times the national average. Health systems in many Native American communities are in serious need of updating and improvement. (Rodgers, 2013) On reservations health care is free but they lack basic supplies and equipment to operate on patients.
