Water purification has undergone tremendous changes over the last few decades. Perhaps the oldest method of water purification was by distillation. Distillation was however not developed for purifying water, instead it was used in production of alcohol. Various excavation sites from early civilizations have revealed a number of distillers. Distillation is being used even today for producing alcohol and also for water purification. The process of distillation is very simple. The water is boiled and once it starts vaporizing it turns into steam which is passed through a serious of pipes into a chamber where it cools down. This is still being used in coastal areas and islands to separate salt from water. The basis of reverse osmosis is that the water is pressurized and is then passed through the porous membranes. The pore of the membrane depends on what need s to be removed and what needs to be separated. By this method many important minerals were able to be retained in the water itself while separating any waste and unwanted chemicals and slats. The drawback of this process was that the various micro organisms like bacteria and viruses could easily pass even through the smallest pore membranes. Modern day water purification is achieved by combining various methods. Primarily water is treated by various chemicals in order to disinfect and remove all the unwanted materials from water, and then the water undergoes reverse osmosis in order to remove various chemicals present in the water. Additional methods like ultra filtration; UV radiation is employed to kill any surviving bacteria or viruses and also to free the water from any form of chemicals.
