Cold War and its Impact Essay Containment is what the United States and the United Nations used to prevent the spread of communism. Two examples of this are the Truman Doctrine and the Korean War. In these two cases containment was very successful. The Truman Doctrine was a policy set forth by President Harry Truman on March 12, 1947. It stated that the U.S. would aid Greece and Turkey to prevent them from falling to “outside pressures” or communism.
Truman started at the bottom in terms of what strategy to take in this war. As mentioned in his speech, The Truman Doctrine, his plan of economic aid was to financially support Greece and Turkey to help them stop communism from expanding to other areas (Truman). Through his efforts in military aid, we became allies with Greece by helping them with their military (Truman). Truman created the United Nations to protect us from communism so communists had a bigger force to get through and keep communism out of the US as part of his military use.(Truman). The policy said that we would give military support to Turkey and Greece to prevent them from falling to the soviets. We would end up spending over 400 million dollars on them. Congress approved the money but not the military support. A few years after the fact, both countries would join NATO.

The main reason for the USA’s military intervention in the Korean war was that of containment. The American aims was to work with its allies to contain the spread of soviet and communist Chinese power using political, economic and if necessary military pressures. Any failure of containment was potentially disastrous. According to the USA the loss of SK might well lead to a chain reaction leading to the loss of much of the rest of Asia, including Japan. This was called the domino theory.
