Victor Gonzalez English 3 Prof. Andrade 3/13/13 The ability to manipulate the audience of mass media has been adapted from one mistake in history. In the year 1938 on the month of October, a broadcast was made called the “War of The Worlds”. The Hypodermic Needle theory also known as “The Magic Bullet Theory” suggest all audience tuning into mass media are passive individuals. The Opinion Leadership theory introduces the “personal influence” it had on people. The opinion leaders are the main targets because they pay close attention to the mass media and its messages. Opinion leaders are able to influence their audience(lower class people) with their interpretation of the media content making their interpretations credible to the audience. An announcement was made at the start of the “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast by the Mercury Theatre in which people did not tune in to hear. A popular radio program airing at the corresponding time was the “ Chase and Sunbourn Hour”. In the script of “War of the Worlds” by Wells, the announcer made this particular message “The Columbia Broadcasting System and its affiliated stations present Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre on the Air in The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells”. Since hundreds of listeners did not attend this announcement at the beginning a panick began to occur through out the broadcast during the broadcasting time. It was also because they were listening to the “Chase and Sunbourn Hour”, a radio station in which presents comedy and musical broadcast. People fled their homes, looked for shelter in rural areas, and moved home furniture to barricade themselves. Missing the beginning of GONZALEZ 2 the broadcast caused thousands of people to panic once they tuned into Mercury Theatre radio station. Producers of mass media expect to channel their message in
