War And Peaceful Coexistence: What Should Be Done About Drugs? The decriminalization of drugs has always been a problem in the United States. Some people agree with the idea to decriminalize drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and many others. In this essay I will emphasize why marijuana should only be legalize, and the benefits it will come with. I’m not a consumer but I know no one has died from an overdose of marijuana, unlike other drugs, heroin for example. Hundreds of people deal with marijuana, either consuming it or selling it, either way, why not legalize it to make something good out of it, a better economy perhaps. Marijuana may have a bad name because it causes short term loss memory, people feel relaxed, feel paranoid, and some say that it makes them lazy. Aside from that, smoking marijuana is like smoking a regular cigarette which is legal; they both have the same side effects. Heroin, and cocaine, on the other hand is way stronger, they can cause health problems at early use. Injecting heroin, has a risk of contracting HIV or other hepatitis from needle sharing, it can increase the risk of miscarriage, pneumonia, and liver disease. I don’t seem to understand why the decision to make marijuana legal is difficult. Alcohol is legal for people over 21 years of age, which of course we know that under age people still consume it. But the number of alcohol poisoning deaths in the United States is shockingly high, consistently between 300 and 400 each year. The number of annual deaths from marijuana poisoning remains always zero. (Bruce Mirken/AlterNet: Booze Kills, Pot Doesn’t) The article I read states there are 60,000 individuals behind bars for marijuana offenses at a cost to taxpayers of $1.2 billion per year. Taxpayers annually spend between $7.5 billion and $10 billion arresting and prosecuting individuals of marijuana violation. (NORML.
