The Wangari Maanthai Movemnet GS104 Into to Environmental Science The Wangari Maathai’s Movement is a movement that has a life story that started with a woman at a young age practicing a love of nature she inherited from her grandmother. This movement has changed the traditional thought of planting a tree, into a movement that provides a source of income for natives as well as a way to sustain our ecosystems through preservation. Use and recycle are the key elements in the movement. In Africa, the women of the land are responsible for preparing the meals and collecting firewood. However, due to deforestation causing many of the streams to dry up, resources became scarce in the native lands. Women would have to travel further and further just to get supplies for everyday living. The idea of the movement was for two reasons, to provide a source of income for women natives and as a revitalization of the ecosystem for water sources. The trees that were damaged were replanted and nurtured until fully grown. From this step, the trees were to bear fruit so that the native women could sell them for profit. The idea of one tree providing so many resources is unbelievable. Movements like this could be taken into consideration when we think of our own land. Forests can be used in other sustainable ways that would help our environment prosper in a more eco-friendly way. Just like the Greenbelt movement, we can start to ac ton the use and recycle method. Maybe the government can start such plans as replanting the trees in the areas that have damaged or torn down. A rotation system can even be planned out as to where certain sections are used for a period of time then replanted, then by the time another section is ready for use the previous will be already in the stages of growth.
