Walt Disney: Who was Walt? Alyssa Wade 3/10/15 Walt Disney was born “Walter Elias Disney” in Chicago, Illinois on December 5th, 1905. Walt attended the new Park School of Marceline in fall, 1909. On November 28, 1910 the Disney’s had to sell their farm. At that time, two of Walt’s older brothers – Herbert and Roy –had been fed up with the constant work and little to no spending money, and ran away in fall 1906. So, in 1911 Walt’s family moved to Kansas City, were Walt and his sister, Ruth, attended the Benton Grammar School. At school Disney met Walter Pfeiffer, who came from a family of theatre aficionados and introduced Walt to a world of vaudeville and motion pictures. After this, Walt was spending more time at the Pfeiffers’ than at his own home, as well as attending Saturday courses at the Kansas City Art Institute. Disney’s Father – Elias – acquired shares in the O-Zell jelly factory in Chicago and moved his family back to the city in 1917. Disney began his freshman year at McKinley High School and took night courses at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. By this time he became the cartoonist for the school newspaper. Walt had hopes of joining the army, and had dropped out of high school at 16 years old. However, he had been rejected for being under aged. Walt and a friend joined the Red Cross, where he was sent to France for a year as an ambulance driver. Walt moved back to Kansas City hoping to find work, outside of the Chicago O-Zell factory. He wanted to start an artist career for himself, and considered being an actor, but instead decided to draw political characters for a newspaper. Walt couldn’t get a job as an artist, so his brother Roy got him a job through creating advertisement for companies.
