Walmart Case Study Analysis: Walmart Turns to Mobile for Weather Alert With the very unpredictable weather pattern in the United States, and the ever lurking threat of Global Warming, company’s like a Walmart are doing what it can to try and stay one step ahead of the changing weather or at least a close second. In the winter of 2014 the Hampton Roads area saw the most snow it had seen in several years. The local resident was scrambling to get supplies in preparation for the storm. There were several stores running low on much needed supply’s This is one of the one of the reasons why Walmart was interested in instituting an automated weather alert system. Walmart has more than 3,800 stores across America, and that is a lot of Business being conducted on a daily basis, having a system in place that would contribute to their Business Continuity Plan (Turban, 2011) This plan will allow the retail giant to meet the needs of its customer by ensuring that in case of serious weather it can take appropriate action. Having an early warning system in place as well as meet the safety need of their employees. When there is a threat of severe weather the stores can then make a decision to close stores early or release some employees. How does the smart notification, weather service work? It is simple the service generates, authorizes, and delivers severe weather alerts to subscribers when severe weather (hurricanes, lightning, floods, wind gusts, tornadoes) is detected within their proximity (Send Word Now, 2014). The accuracies of the information that the store receives is based on a cross section of information that is pulled together from different resources, in other words, Walmart does not rely on just one weather source, it uses several sources, and service such as WeatherBug and Send Word Now.
