A lovely family of six is piling into their minivan, and as the camera quickly shifts, it has become clear the family has just finished shopping at Wal-Mart. The family arrives to Disney Land and a title card is shown to explain what just happened in the commercial: “Wal-Mart saves the average family $2500 a year. What will you do with your savings?” The company advertises it will take care of your family and save you thousands of dollars each year, however, Wal-Mart fails to take care of its own employees by encouraging them to find other means other than their wage to provide for themselves and families. Wal-Mart started out small, but in recent years the company has increasingly grown and opened stores country wide. Through eyes of local and independent business owners, Wal-Mart is viewed as a monster that drains taxpayer money, and forecloses local and once thriving businesses. It is clear Wal-Mart has negatively affects the businesses’ around it. The store simply captures the sales and surrounding leaving no competition for local independent businesses. To make matters worse businessmen refuse to buy foreclosed stores because no profit will be made with Wal-Mart in the area. However, to counter act the claims Wal-Mart has declared that its stores provide thousands of jobs for those who are unemployed, but according to the recent documentary Wal-Mart - The High Cost of Low Price the company does not do so. The interviewees, who include current and former employees, have expressed negative opinions on Wal-Mart and allegedly Loci 2 claimed Wal-Mart barely provides any hours for the workers and usually job application forms are stacked and ignored unless it is crucial to hire someone.
