LORD OF THE FLIES CHARACTERS ESSAY. Ralph: Ralph is a tall 12-year-old, and considered good looking. He’s is one of the oldest boys on the island and immediately elected leader of the group due to his good qualities. While most of the other boys are concerned about playing and having fun, and avoiding work, Ralph established a government for them in order to get rescued, and to maintain order. He insists on building shelters and making a fire on the mountain so that if a plane passes, the pilots will see smoke and the boys can be saved. Eventually when Ralph and Jack get into a fight, Jack leaves and forms a separate group that focuses on savagery and hunting. Shortly after, most of the boys have joined Jacks group and became savages. After Simon’s and Piggy’s death, Ralph is the only civilized boy left on the island, and he became the hunted animal by the savages within the kids. Jack: Jack is about Ralph age. The book describes him tall, skinny and bony. He has red hair and freckles all over his face. From the beginning Jack seems to have a lot of emotions, anger, and savagery in his light blue eyes. All that Jack worries about is hunting and killing pigs. Jack is cruel to other boys, he did not even care that Simon fainted next to him. He also picked on Piggy all the time and called him names. Although, unlike other boys, Jack is brave and likes to take risks, which is a good quality for a leader. In the novel, Jack changes the most. In the beginning of the book, (p. 42) Jack says “ I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are the best at everything. So we’ve got to do the right things” . After the fight he had with Ralph, he became leader of his own group and used violence to gain power and respect from the little kids. They were savages that would hunt, kill, and have fun
