With Wal-Mart growing larger and expanding day by day, the issue of whether Wal-Mart accelerates or retards the American economy also grows. With Wal-Mart super centers opening across America everyone is becoming exposed to Wal-Mart’s practices. This exposition gives everyone the decision of whether they think that Wal-Mart has a positive impact on the American economy or that Wal-Mart has a negative impact on the American economy. The opposition believes that Wal-Mart has a positive effect on the American economy. They believe that Wal-Mart accelerates the productivity level of American businesses. Also they believe that the low prices help out lower class America, increase the productivity level of a country and that Wal-Mart provides job for thousands of Americans. According to Riper in his article titled, Why Wal-Mart May Just Be Good For the U.S., he says that Wal-Mart has been the forefront of the productivity boom. Riper presents information of a report released by the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, which studied the "Wal-Mart effect" for 89 counties in its region over the past two decades. The study shows that between 1985 and 2003, personal income, overall employment and retail employment grew faster in counties with a Wal-Mart than in those without one (11). Clearly in countries where Wal-Mart is present their productivity level. The opposition believes that Wal-Mart bring jobs and opportunities to the people. With in one Wal-Mart there are hundreds of jobs up for grabs in a community. Not only does Wal-Mart provide jobs for thousands and thousands of Americans, it also benefit’s the people who aren’t working for the giant. According to Bartlett, the main beneficiaries of Wal-Mart's low-price policy are the poor, who can now afford products that would be out of their reach but not for Wal-Mart, improving their lives
