In politics today there are two different models of how our elected representatives should actually behave when they get into elected office: one is trustee model and the other is delegate model. Trustee models hold that representatives should be allowed to use their own judgment when deciding upon how they will vote on particular legislation. They wil ideally consider both the facts and the views of their constituents, and are given the latitude to make their own final voting decisions, regardless of whether or not the majority agrees with this voting decisions. it is understood that the vooters trust that the representative will always vote for the best interest of his constituents, thus relieving the constituents of the hard work of learning about the issues and comunicating with the representatives.

The reason that they are not today is because of popular sovereignty. He argued that each state has the right to determine whether or not they shall be a free or slave state. The federal government does not have or deserve the right to restrict slavery. If popular sovereignty were in action, then perhaps all of the states would eventually abolish slavery as the other states before them had. Douglas reaffirms that slavery is mentioned in the constitution; which means that the act of slavery is protected in the constitution.

If our founding fathers intened the Constitution to establish a republic government, why are we so quick to respond that our government is a democracy? Does our misunderdstanding of these two terms make citizens believe that we are entitled, by the supreme law of the land, our Constitution, to make decisions and write legislation ourselves instead of allowing our elected representatives to act on our behalf? Should the Constitution be ammended to allow for a national voting referendum such as many states have adopted? In the paragraphs below I will discuss and define some key points that will give a broader persepective on the benefits and limitations of direct democracy. To start, we must clearly define the difference between a republic and a demcoracy.
