Voices of Freedom 3 chapter 14 From speech of Alexander H. Stephens, Vice President of the Confederacy (March21, 1861) From Abraham Lincoln, Address at Sanitary Fair Baltimore (April 18,1864) Alexander H. Stephens is a Whig leader in Georgia stated that the constitution created by Jefferson was to originally free all slaves. The constitution stated that enslavement of the African was in violation of the laws of nature; that it was wrong in principle, socially, morally and politically. Stephens goes on to talk about how slavery is different in the south compared to the previous slavery. He said that the ideas that the constitution had about free slavery were extremely wrong because they just assumed equality of race. He clams the constitutions “cornerstone rest upon the great truth that the Negro is not equal to the common white man.” He also goes on to say that our New Government is the first in history to not treat Negros the same as us. Abraham Lincoln gave a speech at a Sanitary Fair, he claims that to some people the word liberty may mean that a man may do as he please with himself, and the product of his labor; while other people the word liberty means men do as they please when they please with other men and with the product of other men’s labor. But Lincoln goes on to say further down the page, that there are not only two different and incompatible definitions by the word liberty; he calls the two different things liberty and tyranny. At the end of the Voices of freedom Lincoln states that Maryland has created the true definition of Liberty by abolishing slavery in the state. So the difference between the two is Lincoln believes that the definition of Liberty is what frees slaves and makes them free. Stephens believes that we don’t have liberty because we are still letting slavery happen in the south. So until we make all slaves free there is no liberty
