The most easily accessible Vitamin to all humans is Vitamin D. But still many people are not getting adequate amounts of this Vitamin. Rickets is a problem in many countries caused mostly by a lack in vitamin D, but in 1923 Harry Steenbock found how to add this vitamin to food. This caused this disease to virtually disappear from America. Vitamin D is taken into your body in many ways, it is used for many body functions, and it can reduce disease and illness.
First of all , Vitamin D can be found in many things and produced in many ways. Vitamin D is one of four fat soluble vitamins, and it is also the only vitamin that can be obtained from exposure to the sun. As little as 10 minutes of exposure to the sun is thought to be enough to prevent deficiencies. Getting vitamin D from the sun is the main way of getting vitamin D and is the most reliable. Vitamin D is also found in fish, eggs, fortified milk, liver, and cod liver oil. But is only found naturally in few a few things. People also can get vitamin D from supplements. Vitamin D can be taken in, in very large amounts without being harmful. But it is not recommended to take supplements if you have enough sun exposure. But supplements should be taken at other times (like winter).
Vitamin D goes through many steps in getting used by the body and is used by the body in many ways. Vitamin D is biologically inactive, and must be metabolized to other forms. When Vitamin D enters the body it enters circulation, and is sent to the liver. In the liver it is hydroxylated to form 25-hydroxyvitamin D. This form, while in the kidney helps create 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3-1-hydroxylase. This is the most potent form of vitamin D, and is related to most of the physiological effects of vitamin D.   Vitamin D is most widely known for its use with calcium for strong bones and this is how it helps.
