Reality means different things to different people.   As we go about our lives, we seek to alter those realities.   Technology has helped us to achieve a glimpse into what those alternate realities would be.   Even the mass media has caught the bug of exploring what our future could be.   I will attempt to exhibit the different ways VR has been explored.

Virtual Reality has allowed   us to explore different realities that could greatly enhance our lives  

What is “Virtual Reality”?   “Virtual reality (VR) is a term that applies to computer-simulated environments that can simulate the physical presence in places in the real world, as well as in imaginary worlds.   A French playwright, poet, actor, and director named Antonin Artaud originated the term "virtual reality" in his book, The Theatre and Its Double (1938).   He described theatre as "la réalité virtuelle", a virtual reality.   Artaud claimed that the "perpetual allusion to the materials and the principle of the theater found in almost all alchemical books should be understood as the expression of an identity existing between the world in which the characters, images, and in a general way all that constitutes the virtual reality of the theater develops, and the purely fictitious and illusory world in which the symbols of alchemy are evolved".   But the context of use took a turn in a 1982 science-fiction novel called “The Judas Mandala” by Damien Broderick.   VR began to be envisioned through movies and television.   Movies like the Lawnmower Man and Brainstorm depicted the use of VR in scientific experiments of the human brain.   The concept of VR was demystified in a non-fiction book Virtual Reality (1991) by Howard Rheingold making it more accessible to less technical researchers and enthusiasts.   (Virtual Reality, 2012)
