Television has a negative effect on humanity because it portrays so much violence, ruthlessness and immoral behavior. In the 50’s Television was really worth watching. There were all types of up-beat shows on like I Love Lucy, The Jackie Gleason Show, The Honeymooners, and Lassie. Theses show offered safe comedy and moral teachings. Television started to have a negative influence on life with more immoral shows and became not just occasional entertainment.
The once greatest communication device began to be called the idiot box because it causes people to be lazy, disturbed and violent. Laziness comes from people sitting in front of a box that flashes single images so fast that the audience sees them as moving. Most programs in daily life have no educational intentions. They are mostly about drama, horror, science-fiction stories or violent actions. The argument whether television causes violence or not comes from this.
This is known as the deviancy amplification spiral, in which the media makes a relatively small problem much worse, thus presenting young people as a problem group. In Wayne et al. 's (2008) content analysis of 2130 news items across all television channels during 2006, he found that young people were mainly represented s being a violent threat to society. They also found that it was very rare for the media to feature the opinion or perspective of young people. The media often gives a very one dimensional picture of youth that encourages fear and condemnation.
Critique on Do Video Games Kill? This article “Do Video Games Kill” by Karen Sternheimer addresses the wide spread idea; video games are the cause for “young killers” (210). Sternheimer believes concern for the influence video games may have on youth is spiraling out of control. She put most of the blame for this out of control concern on the media. She also writes some about politicians and the Juvenile Justice system.
This isn't a subject a lot of people would talk about. To be honest who really wants to talk about people get it on in a video while you give yourself a hand. This problem though, is world wide and is hurting a lot of people. But, why is it so bad, and how can it harm us? Pornography has a cumulative effect, the more times you watch it the harder it is to let go of it.
TV news programs tend to overdo certain stories that deal with the negative side of celebrities, to extent of being nauseating. The Michael Jackson case, the Winona Ryder case and so on, are an indication that TV news programs, particularly on the 24 hour cable news channels, can devote an extraordinary amount of time to trivial issues that do not impact our lives in any significant way. But probably they cater to what the masses demand. Another aspect of TV news shows is bias. The shows present balanced and straight forward information are far less capable of building a passionate and loyal viewer base than shows that are biased and satisfy one section of the population, while denigrating the other.
VIOLENT AND ACTION PACKED MOVIES SHOULD BE ALLOWED ON NATIONAL TELEVISION People tend to recognize that violence and action packed movies are the elements of media that helps to contribute to the crimes in real life. We can say that most parents out there are worrying if their children behaviors will become aggressive and react negatively. However, did anyone thought that there might be some hidden benefits that we could not see because of our stereotyping mind set of negative influences derived from this kind of movies? For me, I believe that these kinds of movies have their own positive sides for the audiences and there are some good reasons to broadcast this type of movies on national television. Firstly, there have been some researchers showed that violent movies could help people anticipate other benefits such as thrill and suspense.
Secondly, Bok criticizes ideas of desensitization taken into account for these psychologically violent urges to copycat crimes. She states that viewers are beginning to see these violent crimes as a commonality, and therefore no longer have empathy for the victim but rather begin to associate themselves with the aggressor. Their feelings intensify as they view these things in magazines, in movies, and on “reality” T.V. shows. Consequently, the population has shown a reasonable likeness for violent programming and graphically reenacting the things they see.
Is it true that violent video games turn people into mindless mass murderers? In recent years there have been a number of mass shootings in the United States which the mass media has blamed mostly on violent video games. Since these types of games have only been out for less than 25 years there is a slight issue with trying to answer that question at the moment. The problem is that experts and researchers agree to the fact that at this moment in time it is impossible to tell due to the lack of significant research on the topic. There needs to be more research conducted, analyzed, and published for anyone to make such claims.
If you go on the beach you will more than likely see people lying around naked. America can be considered more conservative than other parts of the world when it comes to sexuality. Even though there is an overflow of sexual innuendo's in the media, there are many American's who frown upon it. Because nudity is directly linked to sexuality, more often than not, this factor has lead to America viewing public nudity as deviant behavior. European's do not consider this behavior to be deviant because they are more liberal when it comes to nudity.
