The children of today are subjected to violence in popular songs, television shows, and even computer games. A parent having guns accessible to children and the society the child lives in all play a part in the destruction of our youth. Juvenile offenders are now facing tougher punishment for their actions. Should society take responsibility for this and try to rehabilitate the youth, or should society penalize the youth and charge them as adults? Juvenile crime is stated as "an act committed by a minor that would be considered a crime committed by an adult, such as vandalism, burglary, assault, or murder" (Silverstein).
Courtney Kemp Mrs. Cooley Eng 3133-06 15 February 2012 Video Games Cause Violence: Fact or Fiction “Do Video Games Kill?” by Karen Stenheimer was a very interesting article. The main goal of the entire article was to inform the reader that congress has blamed the video game companies for violence that happens on a school campus. The article gives many examples to why video games are a threat to the younger generation. It also shows why the games lead to violence in the school setting. I personally do not agree with the article.
He coined this “The Mean World Syndrome”. The more television a person would watch the more paranoid and scared they were of the world and the people in it. He believed there was no before that everyone was born into a violent media and because of this we are virtually immune to just how much violence we are subjected to, Gerbner called this the “Magic Bullet Theory”. According to Gerbner without positives to balance out all the negatives that the media portrays it is making people more scared and ignorant. The news is the primary source of information for 2/3 of Americans, but how many Americans realize that most of the time the headlines are that of a violent act?
The U.S. Gov. is just trying to protect its people from doing the wrong things in society and trying to hinder the act of violence which is proven to increase with the violence on television through heinous acts of violence. With the way society is today it would be best if the United States stayed censoring televisions. The dramatic change in society is going to be the reason that censorship goes from bad to worse right now it’s to most standard of sensory. Works Cited Censorship."
“Youth and Gun Violence” Medical Terminology Youth and Gun Violence Violence, when will it stop? This question is asked by many parents and even youth across America. Violence with youth has spread across the states as if it were a contagious deadly virus only on a mission to take out children. It has caused fear and anger in many families and has risen in statistics rather than declined over the years. Children that are living in the poverty neighborhoods tend to see more violence than those that are living in the upper, middle class neighborhoods.
In his essay, “Video Games Are Responsible for Increased Youth Violence,” author Ron Moten uses his experience working with troubled teenagers to uncover the negative effects of violent media. The problem he identifies is that violent media is responsible for desensitizing youth to violence, hence increasing crime in our society. Motten assumes his readers are educated and sympathetic, but uninformed of the threats posed by violent media. His purpose in his essay is to raise awareness of a connection between violent media and increased crime in society and to convince the audience that violent media needs to be regulated by laws. To achieve his purpose, Moten mainly uses ethos to appeal to his readers.
The Hunger Games serves as an allegory for modern entertainment, economics, and government to criticize on society’s entertainment in violence and how it can provoke violence in society, government’s control by creating fear and weapons, and a criticism on the gap between the rich and the poor which creates a hostile relationship between first and third world countries and these ideas demonstrate that society is corrupt and young people are the only ones that can change it. In today’s society, people find entertainment in violence which can ultimately stimulate violence in society. Teenagers find entertainment in violent video games which can lead to acts of violence. About 97% of teenagers play games that contain little to no violence, sex, and drugs, and studies have shown that in some cases video games can cause teens to become violent and aggressive (Harvard’s) In The Hunger Games, The Capitol finds an immense entertainment in violence. The actual games make young adults in the novel become inhumane and violent in order to survive.
Argument: For Jeff Jacoby, writer of “A Desensitized Society Drenched in Sleaze,” violent entertainment indirectly causes real life violence. He states that even with his highly religious and disciplined background he was “jaded” from exposure to violent TV. he thinks that if he can be desensitized, then anyone can be desensitized. With that thought, Jacoby may have a valid point. If exposed to violent TV for an extended amount of time, it may be able to desensitize anyone, especially if they come from an already broken home or bad neighborhood.
In the article the author Dariusz Dziewanski claims that popular culture image can lead young people to believe that guns can lead to a affluence and power. A February 2008 Statistics Canada report points that more and more youth are using guns when acts of violence crime. Christian Pearce is the co-author of the the book Enter the Babylon System says that guns become a problem when it combined with poverty in North America. Youth often feel scared and threatened in neighborhoods with violence, consequently they turn to guns. Further more some gun violence imagery appears in social media is justifies and even glorifies the damaging result of using a gun.
The 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that nationwide 25.4% of students had been offered, sold, or given an illegal drug by someone on school property (Mieczkowski 1996). These statistics are staggering and directly correlate to the problem the United States is having with illegal drugs being trafficked into our borders. Finally, drug trafficking effects our economy in many ways. The most prevalent one is the amount of money America spends on “The War on Drugs,” which I will elaborate on later. Another effect is the loss of money made in America legitimately to crime groups for illegal goods.
