Bardia Akbarinejad (100695758) Violence in Sports Violence in sports refers to physical acts committed in contact sports such as American football, ice hockey, boxing, soccer and wrestling which is beyond the normal level of contact expected while playing the sport. Athletes sometimes resort to violence in hopes of injuring and intimating opponents and conclusively cheering up the audience. Coaches and players usually apply these tactics in order to succeed and reach their ultimate goal which is being dominant and intimidating the opponent. One of the main reasons of the presence of violence in sports is that people around the world crave physicality and violence in sports. Physicality present in sports makes the average person to be more interested in following that specific sport, or in other words, it allows the average person to escape from his/her daily routine lifestyle. We have to acknowledge that in high intensity sports such as boxing, hockey or any another physical sport the probability of emotional discharge is more frequent than non-physical sports. We cannot close our eyes to the fact that violence and physical contact will always remain a part of aggressive sports. Intentionally or unintentionally these contacts will be a part of physical sports. For instance, in soccer, a player can tackle another player in order to obtain the ball. The referee is not aware of the intention of the player; this tackle can either lead to an injury or just the possession of the ball. Coaches sometimes guide the club members to play as aggressive as they can in the field in order that they can defeat the opponent and cheer the audience to make the game more interesting for them. Also coaches do to increase the player’s self-confidence so that they’ll be highly focused and energetic on the day of the game. We cannot eliminate physicality in sports solely
