VIOLENT VIDEO AND COMPUTER GAMES Introduced to new places around the world every day, violent video and computer games are showing people that it takes violence to solve a problem. These violent video games can also teach one to behave violently or aggressively towards others or situations. Violent video and computer games have been perceived by nonplayers, researchers and parents as being a source of potential learned violence by game players. Playing violent video and computer games can become addicting and can teach one to resolve problems by using violence. Professor Craig Andersen, researcher at Iowa State University, claims that teenagers who play violent video games behave more aggressively than teenagers that don’t play violent video games (Whitney). Others who partially support the above statements are Indiana State University School of Medicine’s researchers, who have come up with the following results after studying male and female teenagers playing violent computer and video games (kidsource): 1) Teenagers with behavior disorders and healthy teens react differently when playing violent video and computer games; 2) Teenage male moods’ are heightened when playing violent battle-related games; 3) Players learn the video and computer game message that problems can be quickly resolved; 4) Players learn the video and computer game message that eliminating the source of a problem is the best way to solve a problem; 5) Females do not enjoy playing violent video and computer games as much as males do and thus, females do not feel as satisfied as males after playing violent games. Professor James Paul Gee of the University of Wisconsin suggests that violent video games such as Halo and Gears of War, if played by mature teens, teaches the use of strategy and team building (Whitney).
