Violation of Freedom of Religion in Burma or Myanmar Burma has not yet ratified the Prevention of Discrimination on the basis of Religion or Belief and protection of Minority Human Rights yet. They have gone against the Universal declaration article 18 and against the above mentioned Human Right. The State Peace, and Development Council (SPDC), the military junta governing Burma, is known to be the world’s worst human rights violators. Some of the crimes that the SPDC has violated against freedom of religion in Burma include: • Restriction of religious practice • Monitoring the activity of all religious organizations e.g. banning of independent Protestant “house church” activities; and the abuses, including forced labor, relocations, and destruction of religious sites, against ethnic minority Protestants. • Perpetratation of violence against religious leaders and communities, especially in ethnic minority areas. • Applying pressure on students and poor youth to convert to Buddhism by making followers of Buddhism a prerequisite for promotion to senior government and military ranks. Parties formed in Burma to help curb violation of Freedom of Religion • Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) The chief of the military-supported Union Solidarity and Development Party, Htay Oo, appeared in a 15-minute broadcast on state-run radio and television and he said, “my party will guarantee Burmese citizens freedom of religion and will engage in "independent and active foreign policies."” • Ministry of Religious Affairs They had major objectives such as to allow freedom of faith, purification, perpetuation, promotion and the propagation of the Theravada Buddhist Sasana, to help out and participate in
