“How has the video-rental industry evolved, and how is it evolving now?” As technology evolved the video rental industry has grown many folds since it was established. VCR was the entertainment device where people used to watch movies at home at their convenience. Video rental business was lucrative and was a big hit in America. Soon many small video rental shops came up to capitalize on this new trend. The demand was so high and the variety of movies was also less to cater the demand. These small stores were not satisfying the customers efficiently. These factors made Cook enter the video rental industry. By 1990, almost 70% of the customers have their own VCD players and were looking to rent out VCD. New technology advancements enabled a cable TV, Direct to home (DTH). In 1999 DVD market has started and the customer service has also improved compared to previous years of business. After 1999 broadband internet had a major impact on this business. People used to rent movie CDs till then now started to download from internet. Piracy has had a huge impact on this rental industry. Many companies like Netflix, Redbox, video on Demand (VOD) have started their video rental business. In the mean while video piracy has reached peak level. There is a huge progress in the technology. In this Internet era, where everything is available in a single click away from the customer. The rental stores are losing their prominence. There is an expansion of broadband services all over the world. There was an improvement in the services provided over the cable and satellites. Due to changing trend in the customer preferences and development in technology video rental companies started alliance with other satellite TV providers. This improved the quality and allowed PPV and VOD services to Customers. Many started online account membership package where a customer can order any DVD
