If someone had told you 30 years ago that you’d be able to build a city in a day, fight a war with somebody halfway across the globe, or play center-field for the New York Yankees, would you have believed them? I probably would not have either, but that is today’s reality of video games and advancing technology. All of the above can be done – virtually, of course – in the world of gaming entertainment. Video games have progressed from 8-bit simple programs to life like three dimensional virtual reality experiences over the past 30 years. The industry has grown from the ground up in that time from practically nothing to a multi-billion dollar industry with a number of different developers and publishers. While the advances in technology are nothing short of amazing, there are both benefits and drawbacks of our culture’s usage of video games.

Many studies done over the past couple of decades indicate that playing video games helps to develop decision making skills. As you play games you are constantly making decisions, which triggers activity in parts of the brain which are used for decision making. Constant activities in these areas lead gamers to be able to make the same decisions as a non gamer in a shorter amount of time. Much like sports practice helps to develop muscle memory; the same basic concept applies to video games and increased stimulation of certain areas of the brain. These finding have been so conclusive that the United States military is actually using video game simulations to help train soldiers before they are deployed. These simulations will help a soldier with their ability to detect hostile targets quickly and efficiently. Also, gamers have been shown to be generally more creative in their approach to problem solving than non gamers. Games often have several methods you can use to solve a problem and because of this gamers often look for a different approach to a problem.
