Video based activity at the lesson Modern education tries to use all benefits of the newest technologies. There appear ubiquitous specialized web-sites, numerous on-line courses, and various TV programs. But there is one more entertaining means of education on which I am going to focus my attention – video it is. In fact, video based activity possess a number of positive features as it stimulates interest, provides a wide range choice of topics and tasks, helps to master different skills and to acquire cultural awareness. First of all, video material at the lesson immediately attracts attention and what is more important never lets it fade. It is implied in our nature that we pay attention to every moving thing and it is easier to focus on something that is moving. Remember yourself sitting in the room where the TV is on. It is just impossible not to watch it. We can use this peculiarity while teaching to make students get interested in the material. Thus, the first advantage of video is that it excites students with the matter and makes it easier to involve them into the process. Secondly, there exist a great number of videos of all kinds so you can always find something appropriate to your topic. Are you talking of politics? Watch debates. Are you talking of environment? Watch something by National Geographic. Is history your topic? BBC has wonderful videos. For children there are cartoons, for adults there are feature films. The list of video materials available for use on the lesson is endless. The thing that is essential is that you can always pick up something and adjust it to your topic and to the students’ level. Therefore, video based activity is extremely diverse and can be used in diverse educational situations.
