5,313 people in Springfield suffer from asthma, and over 5,000 people die every year from an asthma attack. The city of Springfield’s high asthma rates can be blamed on dust mites. Springfield has many older buildings and older housing stock. Older buildings in Springfield have more dust mites compared to the newer building in Springfield because typically older buildings tend to have more of a connection of dust mites, mold, and many other asthma triggers. The ventilation in older houses causes poor air conditions and makes living conditions hard.

In (2003) Brondolo et al linked racism and discrimination to “hypertension” or as we know it high blood pressure in African Americans. High blood pressure is the leading cause of deaths from strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure. The minority members of the community are often totally left out or ignored in the provision of health care (Oppenheimer 1055). There is a significant level of inequality and favoritism in the health sector globally. Evidences indicate that ethnic and racial minorities in the community receive low quality health care as compared to the non-minority groups. This is evidenced by the statistics that indicate that the minority groups report the highest mortality and morbidity rates in the society, especially those that relate to chronic infections. A report on inequality in the provision of care by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concluded that “racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare exist and, because they are associated with worse outcomes in many cases, are unacceptable” (Pasick 67).
are affected by sickle cell anemia. Sickle cell anemia mainly affects African Americans because sickle cell anemia affects one in every 500 African American births in the U.S. Sickle cell anemia is prevalent in many different races throughout the world, but in the U.S. African Americans is more prone to getting sickle cell anemia than any other race. African Americans are more vulnerable to sickle cell anemia because a big percentage of the population carries sickle cell trait in their ancestry line. However, Hispanics are also affected at a rate of one out of every 36,000 births (NHLBI, n.d.). Even though African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to have sickle cell anemia, this does not mean that other ethnicity should not worry about sickle cell anemia.
