This group of people, while making up only 8 percent of India’s population, effectively accounts for over 25% of the country’s poorest people. Although over the years progress has been made to improve the conditions of the poorest tribal groups, more than 50% of the country’s Scheduled Tribe population still remains in poverty. Most of these tribes living in remote hamlets or forested areas, are very vulnerable to disease and face a major challenge in having regular access to reliable healthcare services. In the context of Karnataka, the same World Bank report cites that scheduled tribes constitute 6 percent of the population, and are commonly afflicted by ailments such as malaria, pneumonia, respiratory disorders, snake and scorpion bites, diarrhoea and fever. In addition, tribal people have lower levels of antenatal care, lower levels of immunization, and higher prevalence of reproductive tract and sexually transmitted infections.
