Effective Communication in Healthcare HCA/230 How we talk and express ourselves through body language gives us verbal and nonverbal communication qualities that present our character and opinions to the receiving audience. The principles of communication are crucial to apply when effectively communicating within the healthcare field, whether with patients are physicians, correctly expressing medical terminology is essential for providing overall care. In the healthcare field, communication that occurs within text is extremely important to be able to produce. Writing directions, treatment plans, and diagnosis within text in patient records needs to be used correctly and documented accurately in order to successfully treat and care for individuals and their personal healthcare information. Cultural communication is also another valuable principle in the communication process. Cultural differences arise in every situation and being able to properly translate to those of ethnic backgrounds is crucial when communicating healthcare needs and plans. Patients have the right to ask questions and understand what their diagnosis means and how they will be treated. Questions about billing, insurance, and scheduling is also important to be able to explain and properly apply for those of cultural differences. Being able to know your audience and adjust your approach to fit individual needs of patients creates an open door communication policy for those of cultural differences, gender, sex, and disabilities. Functional communication is also important when verbally and non-verbally communicating. You communicate to fulfill practical needs such as securing a job, renting an apartment, and maintaining health and safety. You also communicate to satisfy social needs (Cheesebro& O'Connor, 2010).
