Ethical Issues surrounding the study and display of bodies in Pompeii and Herculaneum - Ethical issues surrounding Pompeii and Herculaneum have greatly increased within the latter half of the twentieth century involving the conflicting beliefs between the potential scientific value of which can be discovered through the study of human remains as well as the moral and spiritual respect for those discovered within Pompeii and Herculaneum. These ethical issues arising due to mainly the display of these human remains as well as the process of which the remains are studied. Early excavations of both Pompeii and Herculaneum between the 18th and early 19th century had occurred mainly under the hands of what was once known then as archaeologists but are now more commonly seen as treasure hunters. These parties had excavated the area with no respect or care towards artifacts that had been of no value as well as human remains discovered within the vicinity. This is evident when Bulwer Lytton, author of ‘The last days of Pompeii’ had removed a skull he had discovered from Pompeii as a souvenir.

Contrast and Comparison Between Plate of Dionysus and the Stela of Horus It is said that a picture paints a thousand words. Logically, then, a three dimensional object must evoke words beyond limitation and capture emotions that only the sculptor himself would have expressed. This seems to be the case in both the Plate of Dionysus of the Sasanian period and the Stela of Horus from Ancient Egypt. As they each embody the artistic era of their time, their influences can be seen in one and in the other. Propaganda throughout Art History Khafre Enthroned Made in the old kingdom of Ancient Egypt, Khafre Enthroned is a great example of propaganda throughout history. The piece is sculpted with diorite, an extremely dense and hard rock that holds its form extremely well. This piece is a ka statue, which the ancient Egyptians believed held the soul of the one for which it was made. They believed that as long as one’s ka statue existed, one would live in the afterlife. The sculpture is extremely rigid and frontal, characteristic of ancient Egyptian sculpture and art.

The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bhagavad Gita are two myths that pose historical facts about their ancient society. In the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bhagavad Gita we see two heroes that go through a central struggle that they both have to overcome; Gilgamesh central struggle is to obtain eternal life, while Arjuna central struggle is to not fight against is kinsman. They each also share similar behavior of trying to escape their destiny but realized that they cannot through the advice that their gods give to them. Their culture, religion and society share some similar aspect in their everyday lives.

Both authors share some common themes. However, there are definitely major differences. Quindlen’s piece is not only significantly shorter but her writing style, examples, and opinions are a bit different. Tannen’s writing is lengthy, personal, analytical and well sourced.
